Now that the bodywork is almost finished on my car I'm thinking about the next thing to get sorted. When I bought the car the guy told be he'd seen other 944s with sunroofs that went higher. He wasn't wrong, it barely lifts an inch. From inside it lets in a sliver of light and a bit of fresh air but not much.
I contacted Kyle at http://only944.com/ about this and he sent me the following:

I'm going to guess that your plastic sunroof gears might be broken, or, the arms were not aligned correctly after installing new gears.
Here is what I would do to fix your problem.
Close the sunroof all the way and remove the sunroof from the car.
Remove the large cover from underneath the sunroof arms. Then remove one of the small covers from the sunroof arm. After removing this small plastic cover the arm, and gear should fall out. Check the gear to see if any teeth are missing. If no teeth are missing, then check the other arm and gear. If no teeth are missing then all you need to do is realign the arms.
To align the arms: Remove both arms and both gears. Now check to see if your sunroof cam is broken. I've attached a picture to show what a broken cam looks like. If you see the cable sticking out, like in the picture, then your cam is brokens and you will need to fix this before moving on. (we sell and aluminum one) If the cam is not broken, (key on to acc.) then push the button to close the sunroof all the way. Keep the button pressed until the cable stops moving. Now you can insert the plastic gears and the arms. Install the arms in the fully closed position on both sides. And install the small cover that holds the arms and gears in.
Now test out the sunroof by reinstalling it and checking to see how high it opens.
If the plastic gears are broken you will need to replace them first. But before replacing them you will need to adjust the sunroof motor clutch. They become too tight over time and that's what causes the broken sunroof gears. It's an easy fix.
This all sounds pretty straight forward and fairly easy, but the truth is I don't understand it all. Or should I say, I don't know all the terminology and where everything is.
So that got me on to YouTube where I found this really useful video, which maybe will help someone else too:
I'm hoping it is just the arm alignment. To me that would make most sense since I don't hear the motor continuing to run when then roof is fully up or down. But I'll settle for broken teeth on the gears.

Ah the sunroof joy. First time I did this I stripped the new gears I'd just put in, old ones were stripped. It's a real pia. Set the clutch, adjust microswitches, set the arms and gears put the covers back on. Press the switch and be prepared to do the arms again, if you hear a horrible load clicking you've stripped the gears. Be careful not to loose scews, washers and the little black caps from the headlining. Working position is horrible and your hands get covered in grease. Clarkes garage is a great help. Just replaced the seals from Kyle, that was pretty easy. Fortunately the gears are not expensive buy 4 just in case. I found it complicated and very difficult to get the arms even. There must be a trick to it that I have not discovered. Mine still has a mind of it's own and will not always release, sometimes it won't lock down on one side. I've leave it til Summer plenty of other jobs to keep me occupied.

Well this turned out to be a pointless post. After getting the car back from the bodyshop earlier in the week I checked the sunroof today. It was working perfectly! Went up loads further than I've ever seen it go before and I'm pretty sure it was as far as it is supposed to go.
This is why I love my car so much, it can even fix itself.
