as some/most of you know sarahs gearbox is a tad noisy on idle with the clutch released, so i thought that by changing the oil in it might quieten things a bit. i hear these box's are noisy anyway but in all honesty it sounds dry and dry i mean like an old traction engine flywheel spinning dry sound! could it possibly be the torque tube or the bearings inside the gearbox or maybe bearings inside the torque tube? incidentally the oil i put in there is 75/90 gear oil. the old stuff was a bit dirty but not black and had no filings in it. there is an additive for gearbox's would this make a difference? |

Swepco from Berlyn Services (and others I imagine) is mean't to help whining boxes. Haven't tried it mind. |

It could be the clutch release bearing. They are notorious for it apparently. Well mine is a bit graunchy sounding in neutral too but this will get adressed along with the clutch proper. Adam |

If you hear a rattle when stationary in neutral and the pedal is up then it goes away when you press the pedal down - it's normal. It's just the shafts spinning around not connected to anything. Both mine do it (and have done so for 90k miles) A whiney gearbox will make itself heard if you are cruising around at 60+ mph. These cars are supposed to have the oil changed every 4 years but most non-enthusiast owned examples don't get this. Some cars I looked at when buying had no evidence of ever having it changed ![]() |

Swepco is excellent, but the torque tubes can whine yes. That used to be more common in 924s though. |

Mine had Swepco put in just after I bought it. The difference was amazing! Still noisy but less rattle & a much nicer change. |
