 Post subject: Car gone in for wing bottoms and a full repaint

This morning my cab has gone in for new wing bottoms, all the trolley dings and creases out and a full repaint. As soon as I get it back its going in for a new roof in burgundy mohair. Then its getting treated to a new full stainless exhaust system. Hopefully get it back end of April ready for the summer months. In the meantime, I'll order new decals and bonnet badge to finish her off

. Thing is, the original tonnau cover is black and I'm think of asking the trimmers to make me a new one in burgundy to go with the new hood and punting my black one on. good idea or am I out of my tree??

I posted another thread yesterday re the rear Porsche decal to replace or not, and I think I'll replace.

Can't wait to see her all finished and get back to driving her. The garage in lonely at night all empty like........

Mine is going in for a new wing bottom as my passenger side has pretty much completely gone now. I'm also having some bubbles sorted on the sills and if necessary new metal welded in. How are your sills looking?

Sills are looking OK apart from a little bubble on the nearside middle. This is getting sorted along with the wing bottoms.

A bubble will probably mean that the whole area is as thin as tin foil. Not an insurmountable problem though and not a great further expense when looking at the cost of the other work.

My sills look fine apart from a couple of bubbles but when i pushed a pin into the bubbles, water gushed out. Whatever bubble you see probably means that 4 times that size of metal is rotten and needs cutting out. Better to do it now before it spreads though.

Hi

Just a word of warning on replacing the bottom of the wings, this is not as straightforward as one may think, it's a complicated shape with a compound curve thrown in, I would want to check the work before painting. While you still have the car make up a couple of card templates that match the arch itself from a given point down to the bottom lip and also for the flare of the wing at the bottom edge so that you can check that the work done is as Porsche intended.

hi pete, ive had replacement panels made up from that classic car company that has been highly regarded, and test fitted them for shape etccc and they are superb. took them along with the car to the bodyshop so they could take a look and they are more than happy with them, plus it gives them less work to do re the panelbeating.

I used the same panels and still had problems...it's not the panels themselves but the fact that they aren't very high, being just a little above the underseal. So what happens is the bodyshop starts to cut the wing and finds that it needs more removing than originally thought, making a good join very difficult. I've been there, got the T'shirt, my bodyshop who has a very good reputation dealing only with Porsches made a bit of a mess of the repair on my car. To be fair, once pointed out by myself (the car was actually finished including paint and guard film), they stripped the wing back down and remade it to the templates that I had made, it's now perfect...all at their cost which wasn't cheap.
I'm just giving a heads up to try and stop anyone else having the same issues, I have seen repairs of the bottom sections which look terrible, usually done by bodyshop's with little experience of the 944, the fact that even a Porsche specialist had issues tells me just how difficult a job this is to get right, at the end of the day they work to a price. Having to spend days doing a job that they originally thought would take just a few hours is where things start to go wrong...I only had the one panel that needed doing, a complete car will only add to the problem.

thsnks Pete for the advice, definately taken on board. i'll be popping down periodically (they know this) to see how things are progressing, so any issues i'll be able to air my concerns and hopefully work it out.

Snap guys, My cab is booked in for the sills, wing bottoms and sills, panels from classiccarpartsandpanels . then off down to monsoon for a new hood, interested in a tonneau cover tho.
I have been saving for a year for this, the other thing i am having is a carpet kit in deep pile luxury wool.
The trouble is the new hood and respray will make me notice i need some new Veloce wheels, mine are curb damaged!
Its never ending, but who wants to die in credit.

I live about two minutes from there, they seem a nice bunch as stopped in the other week to ask them something.

Some nice roads down the coast around Beachy Head :)
