I would like a set of decent speakers to go in the doors of my early 944 (1984). I bought some JBL 6x3's from ebay not long ago but they were too deep to fit in my door panels, they fit in the rear quarter so not all lost. Anyone know of a good set that will fit in the doors.

Tom

I presume you mean 4x6's ??,the JBL speakers on ebay have a plastic ring round them that needs to be removed before they will fit which is what i have for mine.

I agree the JBL ones need to have the surrounding ring removed and it is still a tight fit and they tend not to sound too good as to stop them vibrating you really need more space to put foam and deadening behind. I saw an article on a 924S website a while ago that showed how to make a spacer ring for the outside of the door panel to move the speaker mesh away from the speaker and allow more room for fitting but these cant be too deep or your door wont close. You could always look for a set of S2 door panels with the speakers beneath the door pocket and tweeters up at the top.

Or you could just fit the later style covers with spacers to the early door panels.

On my car the magnets on the speakers hit the runner for the electric window and the speakers sit about 1/2" out of the door. There is less space in the early model 944's than the later ones as far as i can tell.

I believe Alpine make a set of 6x4s which are meant to be quite thin, they're part of their custom fit range and are designed for OEM holes. When I worked in Halfords years ago they normally had a set knocking about, might be worth asking if they have a set in store that you can offer up in the car park?

You could alsways try replacing just the door pockets and handle from a later model and putting the speakers in the door pockets like a S2

I have a 1984 944 fitted with thin Alpine speakers and the sound and fit are both excellent.

I spent ages calling around car audio places and looking for a solution on the web. There were suggestions of 'door builds', pods, shelves, etc etc. Mine is a 1986 944S. The available space in the front door trims is very limited. In the end, I went for the best / largest that would fit in the front (still tiny) and added some dash mounted 'Morel' tweeters and the largest possible speaker replacements in the rear panels (which involved removal of the rear windows and a spendy install at the car audio place). This sounded 'clean' but had ZERO bass so I added a high quality 'Bazooka' bass tube in the boot. http://www.sasbazooka.com/bass tube
End result is not bad. Total cost was about £600 + the head unit which I already had. If you are looking for an audio place in London, I went to a really well known one in North West London which was first class. I could dig out the receipt for the name/number if that would help?

Good luck with it. You have to do something as the standard set up is terrible, even by mid 1980s standards!!
