After you start the car, turn the radio off and as you drive off past 10kmh/6mph is there a groaning noise from the front driver's side. The pump does a test at that speed and you should hear the noise.

The ABS has a separate ECU located in the kick panel in the driver footwell near the hatch release, though I don't know what you will see visually in there.

If the warning light is cycling & the pump runs then this will need diagnostic test to take further. It's probably less subtle than a more modern system, so are you sure it's not working? Old ABS systems can be big money pits to sot out.
