bought an 1998 S2 a few months back and I have been doing the sills (is it me or is bathroom sealant not quite as good as a proper weld?) , wings and checking the brakes and suspension (its got MO30 bits all over it;-) ). I haven't driven it much as its done 130K and I don't think the cam chain pads have been changed. So I am being a bit cautious with it. As far as I can tell there is nothing wrong with the engine. I drove it 300 miles home from Southampton. It doesn't loose water or burn oil, and goes like a stabbed rat, but I can't make my mind up to either: 1) give the engine the full service (belts etc) and just change the cam chain tensioner pads (both of them). or 2) full belt service and take the camshafts out and change the chain and the pads (how good are the cam chains?) or 3) take the cylinder head off and do a full top end check/rebuild plus belts (seems a bit OTT at the moment) any suggestions or recommendations very welcome. |

Certainly 1). If there is no record of the cam chain being changed then I'd do 2) as well. 3) is overkill. |

I was in the same boat as you. i didn't know when the belts, chain, and slippers were done, so recently had the lot done inc the water pump. big (ish) bill, but i know that everything is new now so peace of mind whilst driving her. it was stored in the garage for 4 years, and in the last 3 wasnt even turned over. decided now the kiddiwinks are a little bit bigger we can enjoy her again. so all pads, chain, belts and water pump were renewed along with rear brake lines, new battery, fresh oil and coolant. yesterday it went for its MOT and passed, no adviseries either. tomorrow a new set of rear boots to go on and its as fresh as a daisy for a while. |

I'd go for 1) In fact before that I'd whip off the cam cover & have a look before driving it any more. Very easy to do, you should be able to spot any broken teeth or nasty tensioner pads. |

Good idea replacing the chain and slippers (the top one takes the most wear). Replacing or checking this item was never on the 944 S2 service schedule, it would seem! Replacing the dizz, rotor, coil, plugs and HT leads will also make an extreme difference and of course belt replacement... Dave S2 CT |
