I have the chance to pick up a pair of front struts from an S2 with discs and 4 piston calipers. Ive been told that I would need a new master cylinder as well as s2 brakes on the rear. Is this a feasable project? Can i fit the s2 discs and calipers straight onto the rear hubs or would i need some of the s2's rear suspension setup?

Cheers

tom

It's far from that simple I'm afraid. The S2 has ABS style hubs, the early, pre late 86 cars don't. So for the front you'll need wishbones, struts, hubs, spindles, callipers, discs & different hoses. The back end will need all the S2 bits, trailing arms, hubs, discs & callipers, different brake pipes, backing plates & possibly different half shaft ends. Oh & you'll need late wheels (all 5) for all 4 corners as the offset is completely different & 15" wheels don't go over S2 callipers.

Also the speedo cable is in the n/s hub on the early cars, where as the S2 has an electric sensor mounted in the gearbox !!

Physically fitting them isnt a particilarly big job (actually its someone elses job as youll need an adapter), but making them work properly can be a little more complicated. Early cars werent fitted with a brake effort limited where as later ones were. For a track car you can retain the original master cylinder and fit a bias valve, but that might not be suitable for your application.

Mine runs early S2 calliper all round but a standard late 2.5 Lux m/cylinder & I've had no problems with brake locking etc.
AFAIK you can't run an adapter on the early cars as there simply isn't the space for the 4 pots, incorrect disc size & offsets etc. hence needing spindles etc.

Going to check all my discs and pads and change the brake fluid. Should make a reasonable difference. Esp as I keep driving around with the damn handbrake on. Rlly need to get that parking light fixed, damn you 944 you have too much torque.

Early single pot pork brakes are pretty good. Check that the slides are free, they tend to seize with lack of use. If the brake fluid looks the colour of gravy then it needs changing PDQ.

Theyre the calipers that were fitted to the original 3.0 litre 911 Turbo, so theyre pretty good. If you buy new discs (ATE; not Zimmerman); new pads (ideally Pagid) and replace the brake hoses with braided parts (front and rear), then itll stop as much as youre likely to need. If youre using the car on track then the brakes are still up to the job; as long as you brake short and hard.

so if you use standard non S2 front legs, '86 on you need to fit the calliper brackets, but nothing else is needed, just bolt the S2 calipers on and bleed the brakes ?

On mine it was new legs (not necessary) & new hubs & spindles, the callipers, discs & new brake hoses (S2 ones are different), on the rear it's discs & callipers & brake pipes to the callipers.

Ask Tony at Northways! He apparently swore a lot... My car was originally from the north of Glasgow & everything was seized solid. He reckoned he'd used nut splitter, hacksaw & grinder. Lots of replacement nuts & bolts required...
