Don't rely on the rev counter for accurate rpm reading, buy yourself a cheap digital counter, it's counts the pulses to a spark plug and the calculates the rpm for 4,6 or 8 cylinders
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Spark-Plugs-E ... SwHnFVrigYfor what it's worth there is an adjusting pot on the back of the rev counter which you can calibrate your rev counter with, I did mine but it's a compromise as I preferd mine to be accurate around the 3K mark so mines a little out at idle (approx. 750-800)
Just noticed you have an early 944, so not sure about you tacho, Just looking at a photo there's no adjuster on the back, there maybe one inside the unit but prob not worth taking apart and risk killing it, if I were you I would use the digital tacho to learn how far out your one is and just live with it
