Can anyone tell me what the idle revs should be please on my car, 1983 2.5 8v as from when I got it it was idling at 1000 but now its dropped to 900 until I drove it hard and then it goes back to 1000.
I've had it in to the garage and they have fitted an auxiliary air valve as they said it was broke inside and that it should idle at around 900 but I'm not convinced they also did the inlet gaskets and changed my oil.

My S2 ticks along around the 850 -900. Most any engine is the same. It is worth lubricating the throttle linkages with some WD40, cleaning them off, then using a lighter oil on the throttle springs or even a light grease, just to free-up any dirt that is offending...

I can't belive how slow I am at replying, I am indeed sorry. Firstly thank you for your quick reply. I have ha da headache over this with a few Porsche specialist garages not having a clue what they are doing, perhaps it's a Wirral thing! Either way I decided to have a go myself as the cold start had stopped working thanks to a garage and they claimed it was because it was summer........even though they changed my Auxilery Air Valve under the manifold £400 later to tell me it should start on 800 (fom cold) even though for the past year it would (from cold) start at 1100 and drop to 1000 when warm.

So I asked around (garages) but they have no clue so I got a new OE air pipe and an aftermarket Throttle valve and changed them myself, a bit of a job as one allan bolt was rounded and one throttle bolt also, but I did it no problem over the weekend just gone and its starts (from cold) now at 1000 and as gets warmer drops just under to about 950. I would like it back to how it used to be, so I am right in thinking that the adjusting screw on the throttle will adjust only the fuel for when it is cold by setting the revs at 1100 and then when its gone warm use the air mass adjusting screw to set it at 1000 for tick over?

Wow that low really? Feels like its gonna cut out to me that low?

Don't rely on the rev counter for accurate rpm reading, buy yourself a cheap digital counter, it's counts the pulses to a spark plug and the calculates the rpm for 4,6 or 8 cylinders

for what it's worth there is an adjusting pot on the back of the rev counter which you can calibrate your rev counter with, I did mine but it's a compromise as I preferd mine to be accurate around the 3K mark so mines a little out at idle (approx. 750-800)

I know I must come across stupid here but I couldn't make sense of the information on that link?

I've order it but I'm not sure what I should do with it when I get it to set it right?

Just noticed you have an early 944, so not sure about you tacho, Just looking at a photo there's no adjuster on the back, there maybe one inside the unit but prob not worth taking apart and risk killing it, if I were you I would use the digital tacho to learn how far out your one is and just live with it
