Post subject:  Torsion bar carrier mount bolt removal
Trying to drop out the rear suspension assembly and hit a snag. One of the bolts that secures the torsion bar carrier to the body of the car is significantly corroded and has basically bonded to the metal tube it goes through inside the bush. I've tried several heat cycles, an impact wrench in both directions, a 24" breaker bar (this just turns the whole bush with the bolt), soaked it with penetrating oil, tried freeze spray. No space to get a grinder in. Running out of ideas. Really frustrating as the other side came out first try.

Anyone had a similar problem with these bolts, how did you get it out?

Put it back together and get local garage to loosen it

I had same issue ended up drilling the head off then 2 days with a cold chisel .....no easy fix I'm afraid

Unfortunately can't take it to garage as transaxle and clutch removed, brakes drained ect. Looks like many hours with a dremmel and/or hacksaw blade sigh...

A reciprocating saw with a metal cutting blade should get in to get the two ends off. You might be able to get a drill onto the cut end on the wheel arch side but I think it will be ninja dremelling to get onto the cut end on the front side and grind it back sufficiently to think out levering the whole lot out. The danger is catching the edges of the mount. Is it the round hole side or the slotted hole side which is siezed?

It's the slotted hole side. The bush is already toast so can sacrifice that if needs be. The corrosion looks like aluminium corrosion not rust. Was thinking of using jigsaw to cut bolt from underneath past the rubber.

Common issue!

Your only chance is air hacksaw up the insides of the mount. So u cut through bolt and it allows carrier to drop. Takes a bit of time. But no easy option.

Be armed with a.supply of good saw blades as the bolts are hard.

Had the same issue with a 968

I solved it by putting a ordinary nut on the end of the bolt and did it up loosely, then a flat washer on top of that, then squeezed a socket over the threaded end of the bolt.

This the allows you to slowly wind the nut off and jack the bolt against the socket, the effect it to stop the bolt bouncing around.

When there was a lot of load on the bolt, I then put a socket and extension on the bolt head and whacked the body of the car to shift the tube in the bush down the shaft of the bolt, tighten again the nut and hit the body of the car again with the socket over the head of the bolt.

Once it starts to move it comes out eventually.

Better than all that upside down cutting

As you have gathered it's the rubber absorbing all your efforts that's why you can't get it out

Waylander, excellent suggestion will give that a go today. Was reading on a boat forum that applying steam can help break down the aluminium corrosion so i will try the 2 in combo. Will let you know how i get on.

Success! Finally got the torsion bar carrier / rear assembly removed.

Waylander - gave your method a good go but the corrosion was just to deep set, ended up pushing the body mounting points apart. However, that did give me just enough space to cut out the remaining end rubbers to give access to the bolt.

Fortunately, I could just get a jigsaw in there with HSS cutting blade and got through most of the bolt on both sides. Then I got the breaker bar back on it and just sheared off both ends of the bolt. Still a PITA but no so much as cutting it all by hand.

Think that needs a new mount now :D
