Post subject:  1987 944 2.5 ltr n/a Timing Belt Change
Hi, does anyone know who could carry out timing belt/balance belt change in Central Scotland ? Have tried SP Autobahn in Stirling but they no longer have P9021 tensioning tool.

that sounds like a lame excuse to not want the job.

I have done quite a few now without the tool, its no big issue

I was about to say the same thing. A few years ago, saying that comment would get you shot down. People used to say "Use the tool or become a fool". OK, that's a lie, but it did seem like they were preaching that the tool was a necessity to avoiding an engine implosion.

Alot of specialists do them without the tool with no ill effects. I know the specialists who changed the belt on my first 944 simply rechecked the belts at 1500 miles ; I would bet many do not do that. The tool itself I believe is only any good anyway when it is calibrated ; I would like to know just how many are; I suspect one loaned about alot probably isn't I hate to say.

Worst case scenario would be to get the garage to do it, and then check the tension yourself if you are worried. The timing belt generally is OK but quite a people will overtension the balance belt, but even that is not too tricky to tension!

If you fancy the job yourself we recently went through it with a fine tooth comb on the thread- Sorry and diy belt tensioning 2.5l

What gave you that impression? I'm not saying anything!

With the BMW servicing I am in a similar boat regarding people who will actually do the servicing correctly. For the Inspection 1 and 2s I have been quoted the following:

Local specialist 1 : £350
AutoTech Warwick: £520/£750
Specialist No. 2: £350 (as a "Full Service"/Inspection II)
Rybrook BMW : £750/£1500 - Yup! The latter was £850 a few months ago. I guess they really do not want the work.

The first and second specialist said that he would not do the valve clearances which are meant to be checked at every Inspection. They said it's a big job which can add £400-500 onto the bill and that they could tell they could need doing if they heard the engine...
