Car all sorted, tho i would say if you are going to change your clutch at home, on your drive, treat it as three jobs!
Drive shaft and gearbox removal
torque tube removal
bell housing and clutch removal
Treating it as one job can be very daunting, spread the work over a couple of weekends and its well do-able for the home mechanic.
Lessons i learned. cover the hole on the bell housing next to the engine speed sensor, i dropped a bolt and it vanished in the hole, i had to re- remove the bell housing then flywheel to retrieve the bolt, they go down behind the flywheel
lots of cursing.
when fitting the bell housing, put the bolts in the holes first as when the housing is on there is not enough room between the cover and bulkhead.
i now have a clutch alignment tool if anyone needs to borrow one.
Doing it myself has saved around £1000
I'm having a beer tonight :D
I will try to add pictures on my website showing the job in stages.

That's handy to know, I ordered a clutch from ECP and it arrived today so its a job I have planned to do probably in October along with a new flywheel.

Great result and doing it all without out much wriggle-room either! You certainly deserve that beer...

Awesome, well done! Are you going to apply the male logic of "i just saved a grand on that job, now I can buy some upgrade bits" or is that just me?

Brilliant stuff! I bet that's a proper feeling of satisfaction :) I know how you feel crawling under a car on the drive so it's most definitely a very well done :D

I kind of do that, and also as a way to motivate me to do other jobs.

On the M3, I'm about to do the Inspection 1 myself, and I may even make it an Inspection 2 if the last receipt is anything to go by : £230 (bar checking the valve clearances) for all of the parts, when the oil alone is £70 for 5 litres (10W60) When I checked it using bits from ECP I could not get the bits any cheaper than £180 and that's with 30% discount. In parts I suspect it will be around £250 in parts for the Inspection 1 ; I am checking the valve clearances, for which the gaskets are around £100-140 on their own, and a further £220 odd for the Inspection II in 4 years time (that adds on 6 plugs, a fuel filter, diff oil, and if you want to change it, gearbox oil).

Most places who do them correctly want around £500 and £7-800 for a I & II respectively!

Anyway, well done Stu! Fair play to you. What was the issue in the end? Was the centre plate borked?

well done, having done this on a ramp I can only imagine the difficulties involved doing it on the drive, not a job that I'd like to undertake that's for sure. Regarding clutch alignment tools, these are simple to make for those with a lathe, I turned up mine in a few minutes, did the same for an OPRV alignment tool too...simple enough and saves money, or in my case the wasted time popping out to buy one...guess I'm just too lazy...:)

well done sir...:)

Pete

Thanks guys, in the end it was the clutch plate, the center had been spun out of the outer, but it was used very hard, and as for spending the money i have saved, that is going towards the new sills and respray.
