Then a brief rattle, followed by a bang and the sound of metal bouncing between the car and the road.

On popping the bonnet it became clear what had happened.

The crankshaft pulley bolt that I have read about being almost impossible to loosen - had unscrewed itself completely - thrown the power steering pulley and belt off, and the main pulley had moved slightly and was not square on the shaft so had thrown the alternator belt off.

Luckily only doing around 20mph at the time so not far to walk back for the bits.

I have a pulley, bolt and a large cupped washer that was still on the bolt - have I lost anything?

The main pulley sees pretty stuck on the crank even though its not square so I'm hoping I can prise this off and reassemble without too much grief.

Engine still runs fine and no sign of any leaks.

Anything tips tricks or gotcha's I should be aware of when I get to it?

I had this happen to me a year ago and was told by the garage not to start the car because of the crankshaft.

Get it fixed :(

Cant find a diagram of the assembly - do I need to be looking for any other parts -
woodruff keys or the like?

Or is it all just friction grip?

My alternator pulley is still on, (but will need re-seating) and I have 1 x domed washer, 1 x ps pulley and 1 x bolt.

I'll obviously replace the belts with new.

I read its a 24mm socket - but anyone know what torque it needs to be tightened to please?

Thanks

Thanks Rhett.

I see a woodfuff key in the upper part of the diagram but that looks to be further in so hopefully will still be in place.

Off to buy a 24mm socket now and then wait for the new alt and ps belts to arrive.

After stripping off the belt covers it turned out to be that the alternator/balance belt pulleys had come loose and the balance belt was loose.

Thankfully, the cam belt and pulley were all still in place, so I reassembled everything and she's running fine now after re-aligning the balance shafts and tensioning the belt (by feel). Oil pressure is fine.

Just to be sure, I'm having a local Indy check all the belt tensions next week as I don't have the tension tool.

Thanks for the advice.

Crikey - what a nightmare! I am glad the scenario wasn't as bad as it could have been!

Safe driving -
