Post subject:  CV Joints - a few questions
There is some slop in one of the CV joints on my 944 S2. I will attempt to regrease, using the article on Clark's Garage, but if I need to replace it, do I need to just replace the one with play or both ends, or even all four at the same time?

Also, can this be done with the wheels on? I can get much higher on ramps than I can on axle stands.

Might be possible on ramps, and a regrease won't fix it

If one is duff the others won't be far behind

Wheels can stay on but need to be off the ground to spin them for access to the bolts. Ramps won't allow you to get to all bolts. Buy new bolts if yours are old and cruddy, the splines can easily round off when old and corroded. Buy new CV kits. Regrease will be very messy, you will swear quite a bit and it'll not fix the problem.

Thanks guys. Axle stands, not ramps it is.

I was talking about stripping and rebuilding, not just adding more grease, but sounds like that would be a waste of time. New kit(s) it is. Looks like they come with new bolts, so ok on that score.

Are you suggesting doing all at the same time just to get them done or are there any safety reasons - just like you're supposed to change tyres in pairs?

I reckon doing both ends of one axle seems reasonable.

When I did mine, the cost of 2 x CV joints was close to the cost of a factors new drive shaft. So worth investigating.
I checked all 4 and one was scrap. Also the bolts are stretch bolts and should always be replaced.

Thanks Jim. Just checked design 911 and the joint kits (which include the bolts) are £55 each + VAT, whereas the whole shaft is £199 + VAT on an exchange basis, which would also cost me to courier back to them.

Great tip Jim. Currently £142.39 at ECP, after their 20% discount & further 20% this weekend. Brand is QDrive - anyone got any good or bad experiences?

QDrive are ECP's own budget brand I think, always avoided them to be honest in favour of branded parts... They might be ok, but they might only last a couple of years!!

If it were me I'd be rebuilding the shafts using the GKN kits as you know you're getting quality joints that will last.

Hi, The Q-drive one is also on ebay for £94.49 with free delivery. I don't know if they are any good though.

What do you mean by "some slop" in the joints? I have to say that I have never heard of such a thing; I've only ever changed CV joints when they get clicky.

What is the presenting problem that you are trying to cure?

When I grab the drive shaft and pull it in and out (i.e. side to side across the car), I can hear a definite click. I don't hear it when driving, but it was pointed out to me during a recent inspection. Am I being paranoid or should I accept that they'll need doing sooner rather than later?

They will always move from side-to-side - the job they perform means they have to be able to do this. And slightly clicking when they do so is to be expected.

I'd leave them as they are, keep the money in your bank account and stop worrying. And if you really want to spend £200 then send it to me as I'll be able to help.
