I recently bought a 1990 944 turbo. The car some interesting (££!) challenges which I am getting to the bottom of. One that has stumped me are the wheels. They seem to be forged CS wheels and have what appear to be correct marking inside but, apart from the obvious poor recon, they are missing the "scallops" around the outer edges. Any ides what might be going on here?

Someone will be along shortly to tell you that they have been machined to within an inch of their lives, and that you shouldn't use them for fear of being killed to death.

A wheel failing won't necessarily kill you....

I am not familiar with how they might be machined. Wouldn't there need to be lots of metal removed across the entire wheel and the whole profile would look wrong. They seem to look OK in that respect. Maybe I am clutching at straws and need to bin them.

At which time you can choose to either:

i] Take heed

ii] Know better

If they've been filled in then it matters little, but if they've been machined then yes, despite gainsayers, they are dangerous. Theyre borderline new, so machining material away and then baking them in an oven isn't going to make them stronger.

Ive never seen a refurbed wheel fail, but I have seen several original wheels fail, so the advice would only be dismissed by the foolish.

Look un painted and lacquerd metal, which would look close to the anodised finish. Most like sanded down with orbital sander
