Some of you may have seen my quest to convert a standard S2 crimped strut to a screw in Bilstein unit

If you are also thinking of upgrading to Bilstein inserts may I ask these questions :-

Would anyone be interested in buying "converted" casings on an exchange basis ?

or

Would you prefer to buy the collar and convert your own ?

I have no prices as of yet but am willing to offer this service if there is a need for it

They look fantastic, could I ask what the costs would be?

Regards

Thanks for your comments Mark

The 2 collars have been made as a prototype to prove the concept and now I have all the correct required dimensions I will be judging if there is a need to have a batch of collars made.

I have been messaged via Facebook that apparently earlier cars than I thought were also fitted with the crimped top so this issue may affect more 944's than I initially thought

I will certainly let everyone know costs etc once all prices have been finalised

got a pair of very dead 968 ones if you want them for modifying, the only issue with them is the earth mount stud is snapped off on both

Well seeing as the struts look so nice it would have been a shame to damage the strut collar nut so I have had this made

They look superb! Let me know what they would cost to buy a pair from you :)

My hack was expedient - this looks the business

Cheers Rob

Thinking a little further... presumably if you were to drill a hole in the bottom dome of the tube to take the Spax bottom mount bolt then Spax inserts would also fit and of course be far more secure at the top than the current Spax mod? I think I am right in saying that all replacement inserts (Billy, Spax and Koni) have the same basic dimensions?

I think I may have just more than doubled your potential market :bounce:

Not having seen a Spax insert I can't say if it would be the same but I see no reason why it's dimensions would be any different as they designed for the same early casing

I will sort out costs as soon as it appears a couple of people are after collars and or casings

One concern I did have was the bump stop

The original unit has a bump stop under the protective gaitor but its internal bore is too small for the new Bilstein unit

So a quick call to Bilstein UK and they have confirmed that the insert I have has an internal bump stop built in

That's looking very smart indeed! I can confirm the built in bump stops as I had a full set on my old Saab
and they give a very nice controlled ride quality with decent springs etc.

Seems a shame they have to go UNDER the car!!

Cheers

Thanks Kenny

Bilstein UK have stated that a "thick" rod damper has the bump stop built in and the thin rod damper requires an external bump stop
