Post subject:  Automatic 944 gearbox oil &filter change

Hi all I'm getting on top of all fluids done in time last year I went to local garage to see about an oil and filter change on my auto 944 box and his reply was why if there's no problem leave it alone but I'm not sure should I listen or get it done my local Porsche dealer do a oil and filter change for £190 all in ??

He could have a point on the "ain't broke, don't fix" but it's worth checking the condition of the existing fluid to make the decision.... If it smells "burnt" it could do with a change... Colour is an indicator as well...

I believe moving parts tend to like fresh fluids and clean filters... I changed mine in the 968 but I thought I had an issue on mine. The colour wasn't great and the filter was probably original from '93. It seemed quieter and quicker on the changes after the swap.

Be good to know what option you take, i.e DIY or the £190 garage option. Mine is an auto too, hence keen to know how it goes, the cost, the ease of the job and the results thereafter.

Opinion seems to be split about changing the oil on auto boxes.

i had mine serviced, 6 months later spent £1.6k refurbishing the box :twisted:

Sean is quite right, I did the Boxster & had a readaption done & it was hugely improved.
But on the other hand there are many stories where changing the fluid with the crud & it was the crud keeping the box working.

According to the service schedule

every 30,000 miles

Change Engine Oil and Filter
Check tension and condition of timing (and balance shaft) drive belts.
Check tension and condition of V-Belt (Power Steering) and Poly-Rib Belt (AC / Alternator)
Replace Spark Plugs (At least every two years)
Replace Air Filter
Automatic Transmission: Change ATF, clean ATF strainer

It's not a difficult job, certainly on the 968.

ATF and filter change done and refilled to correct 80 degC level.... could I get the quick fill fitting undone? Not a chance :( it was stuck solid..... and my hand driven fuel pump couldnt deal with the viscosity of the ATF and simply gave up the ghost.... :( :(

Filled using length of PVC hose into the top of the plastic reservoir at the rear of the sump... dead easy :D

Now runs like a dream, nice and quiet smooth changes moving up to 3rd at 29mph and to 4th at 40mph, back down to 3rd at 31mph and down to 2nd at 20mph.... :)

Still got my rattle at start up though grrrrrr :(

Final note - this is a first ever for me changing gearbox oil and filter so feeling pretty chuffed tonight :)


Loosen things off first before fully undoing everything - especially the filler plug!! Have a catch tray for when you take the sump off as some oil remains in the sump. The filter is then between the sump and the solenoids in the bottom of the 'box.
