Hi does anyone know if a 968 6 speed will fit my s2 , if so what are pros and cons final drive ratio ect .

I believe in a late S2 it's reasonably easy. I don't have 968 ratios but I'd guess overall the 6th gear will be a nadge longer than 5th on the S2.

Unless you love your 944 s2 more than you would like a whole 968, I would recommend that for the cost of the conversion and parts you would be better off just sticking with your 944 S2 as it is or selling it and buying a 968 the cost difference would probably be quite close.

I can get a box at a good price main advantage being lsd ,also my 5 speed noisy in third and will require attention at some point .

Some S2 boxes have LSD's as well, I know because I have one in my garage. Certainly the ones tagged AOT do.

Forgot to say i am a mechanic ,i have a big garage with pit ect at home so all labour is free ,this would make job cost affective i think .

aren't the torque tubes different, and the speedo needs recalibrating

Good point , tyre size same on early 968 so speedo should be ok , tube splines could be different so i will look into it a bit more thanks .

Only times we have done it, it has been with changing the torque tube, bell housing, gear linkage etc

If the six speed has an LSD its a shame to put it into a 944 S2, there are plenty of people doing 968 turbo conversions who would love to buy that transmission and pay over the odds for it.

It can all be done, and if your a mechanic and spending your own time doing it there is nothing stopping you, so go for it

I've never seen the point of the 6 speeder. Surely it was a cynical marketing exercise as I have never heard anyone suggest the S2 has a problem with ratios nor the need for another cog and the 968 supposedly has flatter torque, hence it was utterly unnecessary. And to cap it all it had an inherent problem with the pinion bearing, admittedly resolved. I assume it's also heavier.

I just don't see the point. Even the OE LSD is a marginal advantage as it's likely to be a very loose LSD after a double-digit number of years use.

Quite true Fen. Anyone got a list of 968 ratios they can put up, my manuals only cover 944?

Isn't 6th an eco/overdrive gear for motorway mpg-scroungers?
