Good update

how bad was it to clean the floor and what did you use? anything special or just water and hard work?

Hi Pete, I actually stripped the floor back to metal using a heat gun and scraper. Then paint thinners to remove the glue residue. Then a rotary wire brush in the drill to remove some of the rubber mastic that was hiding corrosion. Then...zinc and enamel....and lots of hard work too...

Yeah i've seen people do it before but not on a porsche so didn't know if it was as time consuming as other brands. Good job with yours :D

Hello again...well, it has been a short while since I updated this thread. I have been getting on though...honest!

Have now put rattlemat on the floor to replace all the bitumen panels I removed. Then I have cut panels of underfelt to fit into the floor, with another layer of felt over the top. The whole sandwich is now topped by a 4mm rubber sheet. It is as close to what came out as I can make it. Here are some photos:

Took off the door cards, removed the dashboard and still tracing a small leak. It is coming in through the battery tray seam and dripping into the cabin behind the fusebox.. :? So, I have pulled the fusebox down and have got some seam sealer on its way. In the meantime I have a rather fetching blue car cover stopping the wet stuff getting in.

More photos soon..several interesting ideas in the pipeline. However, more carpet 'stuff' to finish off first.

Oh yes, nearly forgot. I took a grinder to the sills....they are quite different to the 944 design, they look a lot simpler. Anyway, I have rust (kinda knew what to expect), so what I found was no big surprise, have a look...OS first..

So, currently battling with 30 year old rubber sealant to get the wing off. Damn, those Germans knew how to apply that stuff big time!

I have got two new sill repair panels from Brickwerks, some galvanised sheet off eBay, and am currently fixing my poor old welder ready for the job. Bought a nice new MIG torch.. 8)

Need to brush up on my welding skills and then dive in.

Impressive work Rhett - considering the state of the car in April - those sills aren't that bad are they?

Well, thought it was about time to update this thread, as I have been a bit quiet recently. However, work has been carried out on this project...really....

Have done quite a bit of 'stuff' in the interior, fitting soundproofing, carpet underlays, refitting the quarter panels with new speakers, fitting a nice new (to me) rear seat, etc, plus plenty of work on the dash - but more of that later.. :D.

Decided to get started on the major mechanicals, so an in-depth strip-down was needed. Firstly the front suspension....crikey those nuts, bolts and other fixings really didn't want to move - I think I have bought shares in the WD40 company!

Got the Dremel out to mark the position of the eccentrics before 'cracking' them free:

suspension 7.jpg

So, at this point the front hubs, discs and struts are off, so is the front anti-roll bar and associated brackets, the wishbones and the steering rack.

More to follow.....

With the struts off, I took them along to Pie Performance where Adam stripped them down - quicker and safer than me trying too! Then removed the old strut inserts, that is a really nasty, smelly and oily job . Once that was done, I took a grinder, a flap disc and a wire wheel to the strut housings. I cut off the redundant wiring bracket as the 924S doesn't have ABS or brake pad wear sensors, and they were just too rusty.

Here are a few before photos:

Then, along with a bunch of other stuff, the strut housings went to the local powder coaters:

Now that is more like it!! 8)

WD40 is not a good release spray, the clue is in the name WD (water displacement) Plus Gas is much better

but great work so far, and wear a breathing mask when welding galvanised sheets

Right, as mentioned a few bits went off to the powder coaters, here are a few more pics - before and after (you can work out which is which) :

Last time I bought new brake backing plates they were almost sensibly priced, they have gone ballistic now - very expensive. However, I managed to get a pretty good front set from Pie Performance. Sadly the powder coater went a bit too enthusiastic with the sand blaster and burnt a few small holes in them. Never mind, nothing that can't be fixed (somehow)... :?
