This is possibly a stupid question, but I had the front jacked up yesterday to check for play in the steering and realised that the strut tops turned with the wheels, my gut tells me they shouldn't!

They were also making a god awful creaking noise that I am amazed I hadn't heard from the cabin, but apparently the steering shaft bearing (which needs replacing) is noisy enough to drown them out...

Video is here (turn volume down...) https://goo.gl/photos/JtZNS2otY7RyPNq27

They should turn, they have bearings inside

Thanks waylander, that's good to hear!

Looks like I've found more bearings and seals to replace

I went through exactly this situation when I reinstalled the struts after replacing the inserts. Don't be too hasty to worry if they only sqweal when the front is jacked up because everything is under tension at that point and the bump stops (the rubber doughnut at the top of the tower) is compressed and so drags when you turn the wheels. What you don't want is lateral play in the towers because this means that the bearings are worn.

Hope that helps

Matt

Thanks Matt, that's a very good point. I'll have another look with the wheels on the ground and try not to get too rattled by any noises! Thankfully there was no lateral play I could find.
