Hi,

My car has always had a few problems from cold changing Gear from 1st to second. I've tried changing the oil to sepco, which does seem to help when the the box is warm, but when first starting off 1st to 2nd gear is extremely hard to get. It really resists going in. There isn't any grinding, and at rest of the gears change perfectly without issue , like a warm knife through butter. Once the engine is warm the issue seems to all but disappear.

Is this a case of the synchromesh for second being on the way out, or can it be something else? If it is the synchromesh can the box be rebuilt, or is it cheaper to but another transmission? Looking online the work-around seems to double clutch until it warms up. Any good?

My car is a bit notchy 1st to 2nd when stone cold. Fine when it warms up. I find if I gently make the change it is ok. Yours sounds a bit worse. Incidentally 3rd to 2nd is perfect. Will also add I've had my car 8 years now and the problem has got no worse so I can live with it.

Stuart

my car is also a little notchy from 1st to 2nd when cold, I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you think it's getting worse...I'm on my second box, both the original and the current LSD box felt the same....btw don't go mad with these boxes, that's what killed my old box and yes it was a very hard 1st to 2nd gear change that did the trick...:)

Thanks Stuart. Yeah that does sound similar. I've found that is also effected by ambient temperature outside as well. On cold days it's much worse. With that on mind maybe it's down to how well the oil moves in the box. Could swepco be too thick?

Cheers Pete. Yeah that did go through my mind. A bit a gentle car and attention with it while it wakes up. Take it that's is a live with it kind of thing?

Mine also - leave it to warm up for 10 minutes before you take off. The older Ferrari's had this trait as well, so we are in good company here - it's a sign of that old type of mechanical engineering that we can appreciate...most times anyway...
