At some point in the past the heater core in my car has been bypassed, presumably it has leaked. I have done a lot of searching the net but can only find guides for LHD cars, where the core can be removed through passenger footwell. I am assuming this is not possible on a RHD car.

Has anybody done this job on RHD car? Did you have to remove the dash? Advice and comments please.

can't help but just to say I need to do this job myself so will be keeping an eye open for any good advice....as it happens I need to take my dash out anyway to repair and cover in leather but the heat matrix needs my attention sooner rather than later...:)

I cleaned and refurbished mine when the dash was out, only 4 screws to remove, plus the plate in the engine bay
Dash is easy to remove so why struggle :D

I ve already got the binnacle and switches out ect and looks pretty obvious that the rest of the dash needs to come out, there is not enough space to slide it out the side. So i shall continue to remove the whole dash.

Annoyingly i have just notice that when the core was bipassed what ever muppett did it has crushed one of the metal pipe connectors, so that needs replaced grrrrrrr.......

Did you have the whole heater / blower assembly out? Is that what you are reffering to? I have the dash and centre console out now and still no wiser as to how to get at the matrix, it will slide part way out but is then obstructed by the main wireing lume and steering columb. Starting to strughle with this now.

Not sure it's the way to do it but I disconnected the pipes in the engine bay
Unbolted the plate in the engine bay
The 2 bolts at the front of the unit and it comes away in one, beware drain pipe that goes through the floor
I follow clarkes guide, scary but easy!

Well that was a bit frustrating, having removed the entire dash and HVAC system just to get at a suspected leaking heater core only to discover that its totally fine! Can only assume that it was leaking from the pipe union grrrr......

Now its all out i might as well clean it up and replace the disintigrated foam seals whilst waiting for a replacement pipe and orings.

It may have been the O ring seals leaking at the heater matrix pipes or the sealant around the the fan blower motor.

Either way, if your car has had iffy wiring done in the past now would be the time to fix it.

Yep, 99% certain that its the O rings in the pipe union and obviously known of the O rings i have will fit properly so they are coming from Germany via OPC. Not expensive just another pain of a time delay.

While all the dash has been out I have taken the opportunity to fix the Odometer (usual broken cog), attempted to repair the cracks in the dash (it looks obviously repaired now but is a significant improvement from what it was), and have tidied up most of the 'shocking' wiring. Starting to see light at the end of the tunnel and still looking good for being on the road at start of May.
