My 1988 944's engine is knackerd, way down on compression, I have a replacement low miler from an 86 model.

It has the later water pump fitted which looks quite new.

What about the oil pressure relief valve, the 86 has the spring and plunger, and the 88 the long cartridge type. Can I swap the housings and valve if there is an issue? I know the 88 is good, is it the housing which dictates the length or is it the cylinder block?

From memory the later version of the OPRV is a direct replacement for the early type and was used as an update on some early cars that suffered problems with their OPRV's. The housings are the same as are the oil/water heat exchanger unit inside the housing, it's worth changing the gaskets as they can be a problem area as they get older and cause oil water cross contamination and only cost around £25-£30.
