Righty ho, spent many hours yesterday on this, but ran out of light. The 2 new mounts are in place through the crossmember
bolt holes but I am really struggling to get them to sit into the castings. Because of this I'm an inch and a bit out on each side
for the actual mounting brackets attached to the block.

Anyone got any handy tips for this? I thought maybe a bit of Fairy Liquid to help slide them into the castings but others will
know better than me! Or, do I just go all caveman at it....

Its all been dismantled as per Clarks, roll bar off, heat shield removed, Xmember undone etc.

All hints gratefully received.

are you using an engine brace from above or using jack and plank from under neither to support engine? I used the jack approach and found that I had to place it slightly off centre towards drivers side to get an even lift and create clearance to get the mounts in. Passenger side is far easier to get at and wiggle. The issue is that there is a locator bulge on the bottom of the mount that has to be in exactly the right position for it to sit down properly. Also, you need more clearance to get the new ones in than you did to get the old ones out as te old ones have been compressed. So, i think its about being as brave as you dare lifting the engine without bending anything and you still might need to get a little caveman.

If you can get someone to assist you could try using a crowbar on the side you are fitting to give some temporary extra clearance to maneuver the new mount in.

Thanks Prophead, I'm using the jack underneath and noticed (as you have said) that
the passenger side goes up more easily and adjusted accordingly.

I think I've got the wee bulge fitted but shall double check, they really
look like they should sit back into the sides a little further than they are
at present. If it stays dry I will re attack tomorrow!

Cheers

have you got them located correctly in the two plastic sliders that are in the cross member recess for the mounts, they can be a bit tight to get in

Hi Waylander,

That is the main issue I think. Difficult to get enough access/leverage to twist and persuade them in, hence my thoughts on a little washing up liquid for some lube, but I didn't know if that could cause other issues?

The ones I removed were Shwartz (or similar) Orange and dated '88. They didn't appear in too bad condition but there is nothing in the history to say when there were actually fitted.

Hopefully I can get some time to fix and I'll report back.

Wee update. Because the new ones are hydraulic, I was able to push down and compress them enough to then lever into the casting within the Xmember. I also lubed up the rubber bits with some of Fairy's finest and they then slid in fairly easily. The main benefit was the holes were much closer to lining up and just 5 short hours later (!) a result!

A complete phaff of a job although there did seem to be less vibration in the car during the obligatory blip test but I'll only know after a decent drive.

What was the problem when you were driving that made you change them? I'm trying to decide if mine need doing.

There are lots of comments about how smooth the S2 is on various sources and I always felt that there was a little too much
vibration coming through the car. It wasn't bad, just not as good as I felt it could be.
Not knowing if they had ever been done and the fact that you can now get proper hydraulic
replacements for sensible money I decided to bite the bullet.

The ones that came of didn't appear particularly worn in anyway (Schwarz Orange), but they are a different shape and I don't
think they are hydraulic, (someone correct me if I'm wrong there). They were certainly a much tougher rubber and didn't want
to compress like the new ones. Just a few test blips on the drive did reveal a calmer cabin but I really need to get it on the road fully
check.

I'll be interested to know what the difference is. I have bought a car that was sitting for a long time and i'm of the opinion that the mounts are shot on mine too. Would be interesting to know someone elses experience.

Gave the car its first run this year and I can confirm that the new mounts have certainly
made a difference to the NVH coming into the cabin. Much better!
