I was looking at some 944's yesterday at a dealers. he seemd to be of the opinion that the camshaft sprockets on the 944S are weaker/prone to failure than on the S2. Any truth to that view ?

Never heard that before.

But then the S is less-loved than the S2 so they may be more prone to failure on that model and they are less loved. Maybe. Although I don't buy it myself ....

Ss also need to be revved more than the S2. The latter is the smooth operator out of the two, and by quite a way.
