Hi Pete..

Don't pry them off unless you really don't want to fit them again ... There are a handful of angled brackets made of pressed strips of steel - which rust like buggery - riveted to the trims which in turn are secured to the sills with, as the other Pete said, welded coarse threaded studs (imagine a self tapping screw coming down from inside the sill) onto which are screwed odd little plastic nuts.

I took mine off during the resto of my S2 with every intention of replacing them... I got as far as making the brackets then the priority list just kept changing and so far they're still waiting to be fitted. My problem will be replacing the threaded studs - rust has claimed most of the threads now so all I have are rusty spikes so I guess I'll have to grind them down and look at using stainless self tappers going up into the sill.

My car has had Turbo side sill covers fitted, and to be honest I don't like them, it isn't a Turbo, and I need to do some sill work. Question is, how are they fastened on? from what I can see they are glued, but just wondered if there are any hidden fixings, I'd like to get them off in one piece as they'll probably have a value to someone, and recover some of the costs of getting the car sorted. Hi Pete when you say sill covers I'm assuming you mean the turbo/S2 sill extensions which are black plastic sections that bolt onto the bottom of the iirc inner sill....there are a number of studs that are welded vertically down onto the sill, the extension are held on these with plastic nuts, nothing is glued. cheers Pete

Thanks Pete, as mine is a non Turbo S2, I guess they are fitted using an alternate method, probably glue or double sided trim tape. They are original sills so won't have the mounting studs. I'll just have to work carefully and try and pry them off. Cheers. Pete.

Hi if it is an S2 - the covers are fitted from the factory - 10mm plastic nuts from behind

G Go hire a stud spot welder don't make more holes in the sills

I think he means it has aftermarket fibreglass sill extensions or 968 sill covers. They could be glued, screwed, riveted or any combination of above. Could be messy by the time they're off.

Thanks all, I wasn't aware the S2 came with the extensions, I had a couple of S1s when they were still in production, but kids put paid to those before the S2 came along, didn't pay a lot for this one, as a running restoration... I have to get them off anyway, I need to replace the nearside sill as its rusted through at the bottom. Cheers. Pete
