Post subject:  944 Light issue

Hi All
Just joined but have owned an 85 pretty honest (albeit with a good colour change respray of unknown times) 944 for about 4 years.
Sold a dog of a Audi UR quat and bought this because times were hard and wanted something that worked.
I have no regrets, spent a year in the south of France with no breakdown cover and trotted back home without missing a beat.
She has served me well, very well and have no intention of getting rid.
Serviced her all up last year with the view to getting MOT. Had baby with girlfriend which kind of delayed things, ended up outside for two months with a now found leak to passenger foot well from battery which has made everything damp.
Drying now but have a problem I didn't!
Headlights won't come up!
I'm an electrician by trade so...
Relay on motor has feed to T87 when lights on.
T87-link wire-T30 'lights up'.
No signal volts to relay on 'lights on'.
Fuse 1 OK.
Lights are on when switched.
Not sure if lift signal to relay comes from main light switch or other.
Does light switch have axillary signal to lift?
I could frig a feed off lamps to relay to solve this but would rather sort it.
Can anybody answer this?

Can do MOT anyway, as lights lifted and local relay removed to stop closed park.
Thanks for reading.
Gav

Will update my info when I sus how.
Porsche 944 2.5 (85) underrated mile eater. Poor man's Porsche in the opinion of the man that doesn't own one, Boxter took that position several years ago in my opinion!
Range Rover P38 4.0 (95) Work in progress, changing it as my work van, think Bowler esq. ticks the 'van' box for me.
Range Rover P38 2.5 (00) day to day for work
Freelander (girlfriend runs about in it, it's green and diesel???)
Honda CB1 400 (95) 'cafe racer' project, done but no licence to ride it

Welcome !

Sorry - I cant help with your issue - but I can make a good car out of both of ours. My headlights go up but wont go down. They seem shy, and go down when no one is looking

Investigation will begin this weekend - armed with gaffer tape and WD40!

Guys,

I don't recall which numbers they are but be aware that there are 2 separate fuses for up and down headlamp motor movement - in addition to the actual lamp fuse.

(Well, there are on the S2 anyway).

Hi

The only time my lights had the same behaviour was after I'd pulled the indicator\wiper stalks out and not seated one of the connectors in 100%. The lights would turn on but not pop up so I traced back all the work I'd done and the connectors fixed it. (this was on a '82 924 so if yours is a square dash its not going to be much different)

Good luck!

An 85 could be either square dash or oval dash - which is it ?
Pretty certain there's only one fuse and relay on the square dash. After changing the bulbs in mine, they decided they wouldn't go down by themselves again ! Some folk said it was bound to be the switch (despite the profusion of relays, the full headlight current still goes through the switch !). It wasn't. In my case the motor had just decided it had had enough; a replacement from one of the usual breakers and the issue was sorted.
Have you tried manually winding them up and down to see if there's a sticky position ? Remember the motor always turns the same way regardless of whether they're going up or down.

Hi
Sorry for delay in response and thanks for your replys
Rav, I had same problem with lights staying up at one point then deciding to go down randomly, seem to remember it was the nut/bolt from motor to lift mech that had loosened slightly causing it to do funny things, bit of playing got this sorted.
I haven't had time to do any more digging but found this when looking for a wiring diagram so I'll be able to sus it now.

Sorted head light problem!
The grey cable from light switch had a break somewhere?
Run a single core in and barrel crimped at each end, hey presto lights go up and down on switch on.
Grey wire is the switch wire to energise relay on lift motor.
However I made the mistake of removing fuse board from mounting in my research and now won't fire up!
She always fires!
Disturbed something, will update!
Done some digging on this one also...
The wiring on the car doesn't look like it was top notch in the first place but the 'after market' installs are present, Radio, electric aerial (not sure where that is??), some kind of immobiliser has been wired in but hasn't been a problem.
Downloaded all relevant wiring diagrams for my early 85 car and am studying and understanding.
