Do you carry your spare wheel? In the modern era of RAC/AA cover and better tyre and arguably better roads, I wondered if 944 owners still carry their spare?

I have been toying with the idea of leaving it at home and carrying a can of Tyre gunk. Many modern cars come with this as standard now. Advantage is the weight saving as well as making the boot look a bit better.

If i can leave it at home, i could loose the heavy worn carpet and buy something like this?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORSCHE-944-1982-1992-FULLY-CARPET-BOOT-MAT-BLACK-/171160677207?fits=Car+Make%3APorsche|Model%3A944&hash=item27d9f8ab57:g:peQAAOSwNSxVZZho

I know it is designed as a cover for the existing carpet, but the shape doesnt appear to have a gap for the spare tyre.

Any thoughts please?

I carry my spare and a can of tyre weld. I like options! My spare is a space saver which is less intrusive, although it's never been pumped up in my ownership so it will be a lottery if it works or not!

Same here. My Mrs bought a brand new Fiesta last year, paid extra for the spare and jack. Some punctures can't be sealed with tyre weld and recovery isn't much use if you can't get a mobile signal or have a long wait for it on a freezing winter night.

Before you throw away your spare wheel, I'd advise reading the small print in your AA/RAC policy document.

(this snippet from the AA's terms and conditions, I am sure other breakdown assistance companies will include similar)

Quote:
General exclusions
1. Basic Breakdown Cover does not provide for
...
d . Failure to carry a serviceable spare

Any additional charges resulting from Your failure to carry a legal and serviceable spare wheel
or tyre, except where this is not provided as manufacturers’ standard equipment. The AA will
endeavour to arrange on your behalf, but will not pay for, assistance from a third party;

seems like too many people have gone down the route of no spare. I'd never be in the position of not having a spare wheel, it's just too much hassle if you get a puncture and let's face it, how much time is the small amount of weight loss really going to save you?

With our third world roads full of potholes. Up to 5 years ago I never needed a spare but since then.
Driving wifes driving school car in the wet a puddle was actually a hole.............bang tyre one gone.
Driving my Mondeo sun in the eyes of oncoming driver forced me into nearside where a pothole wrecked an alloy and tyre (council refused claim saying the road was fine when their blind man last looked!).
Finally going to work in my Quantum 2+2 in pouring rain driving at 30 mph or below in the middle of Westbourne a puddle was a pothole and yet another tyre wrecked but luckily the alloy survived.
So this little lot cost me a pretty penny but when getting the last tyre two years ago a chap had just forked out £850 for a wheel and tyre ruined by crap roads, so I got off lightly.
The first tyre was on Hampshire roads and the 2nd and 3rd in West Sussex near Goodwood, so when you come to see Goodwood events remember the roads are atrocious and West Sussex Council employ lawyers to make sure your claim fails.
I carry a spare
No spare with my Sevenesque special that I built though.

I read that, it appears they'll send one that goes around the spare wheel just like the original one does.

If I remember correctly the space saver wheel/jack etc was an extra £100 for the Fiesta ST, seemed well worth it to me.

Just had this discussion with Honda - Civics don't come with spare wheels now, even though there is a well :?
When I said we would have to leave it then and look at a Volvo - they found a spare :!:

When you shred a tyre the gunk is useless
Would never buy anything without a spare.

Hi All :)

I dont use the space saver in my 928 as its intended to replace a 16" wheel....I now run 18s so useless...

I carry the Porsche tyre gunk and a Compressor and an RAC card..... never needed either (so far) in 10 years...

All the best Brett :)
