sorry I have searched through previous threads about brakes and I havent found a solution yet (or I havent understood)
When I bought my 944 2.5NA the brakes were rubbish, leaking, eratic etc
I have fitted a new brake master cylinder, new rubber hoses (pagid), new seals, refurbed all the calipers and cleaned and greased slideways, replaced the rear metal brake pipes. Cleaned out reservoir etc and sucked out all the old fluid before putting in fresh and bleeding. Brake pedal travel was variable but car stopped OK and passed MOT etc
I have just replaced the rear wheel bearings and adjusted the front wheel bearings. Brake pedal travel is now consistent but feels a bit too long before the brakes start to bite.
Brake pads appear to be wearing normally and the discs and pads have about 3000 miles on them now.

Searched this forum and others looking for a solution - obvious one being trapped air.
read on tinternet that if you replace a master cyclinder it should be bleed off the car with pipes feeding from the unions back into the fluid resevoir. Took master cylinder off and made up 3 short pipes and bled master on the bench. Few little bubbles came out. Refitted onto car whilst still full of fluid etc.
Bled the system again today with a vacuum bleeder and then a one-man bleeder (billy no mates today) Sucked loads of fluid through -not a bubble in sight.

Pedal very hard with engine off - but not like stone, does the brake pedal mechanism flex because of the right hand drive brake pedal linkage?
Pedal slightly squishy with the engine running
car stops OK in a straight line, but it still feels like the pedal travel is too far and not much urgency until you press hard. They don't feel very progressive either
what am I missing?

My 944S2 had the most appalling brakes when I bought the car - yes it stopped but under serious pressure.

I then got the front discs skimmed along with new pads at the same time, which made a huge difference.

Do you have rusty circular marks on the rear discs also? That means the rear pads are not binding 100% with the brake disc. That can also mean that the car hasn't been braked hard enough at speed. It's only now, after six years of use, that the rear discs look like brake discs ie shiny discs on mine - but only just...

Hi, another thing to check is the pedal box mountings. The bulkhead is double-skinned and the frequent operation of the pedals causes the box mountings to fracture. Get under the dash and have a good look around the mountings and see if the actual bulkhead metal has cracked. I have seen this on a couple of 944s, the pedals do not feel right once this starts to happen - so worth checking...
