Post subject: | Suspension Upgrade 83' 2.5 8v |
Hi All, I have been weighing up the options as I want the car for fast road / occasional track so keen to canvass opinion on different set ups although like brake pads there seems to be limited options: Spax PSX with Spax Springs or Bilstein B6. I have ran Bilstein's on my elise and mk5 gti and they handled extremely well although a bit hard - does anyone have any experience with them on an early 944 8v and if so what springs did you use? Thanks ![]() |

Which Bilsteins did you use? RS2000CUSTOM had some B6s on his 944 S2 and felt they were an improvement over the stock items in every way including handling and ride. |

Just do it! B6's are a great improvement and to my mind less harsh than Spax and Konis. Better still you won't have to hack up and modify the strut mounts as a 944S2 owner would need to do, the inserts will be a straight swap. Worth every penny in my opinion. I have them on my 944S2 and will soon have them on my project rebuild 924S ![]() |

What springs did you pair them with? |

As asked before, what dampers and springs did you have on the Golf? Yes, I'd rate them over Spax and possibly over Koni as well in all honesty. Without going to KWs I doubt you'll do much better than B6s for ride comfort and handling. |

My Spax are not harsh, very comfortable all the way to Scotland and back. |

The set up i will be going for in the future is Koni Sports adustable dampers allround with Porsche M030 springs up front, rather than aftermarket springs, reason being is the amount of lowering. Most of the aftermarket springs lower about 30-35mm where the M030 is 22mm which i felt was enough for a mostly road car. Unfortunatel, this will not happen for a while as I have had to shell out a considerable amount of the budget sorting all the bushings front and rear as they are nearly all shot. |

TBH 30mm will be fine. My 951 was way lower than 30, and proabbly even 40-50mm on coilovers. It was fine most of the time. On on a handful of speed bumps was there a problem. If I am honest it felt far far nicer to drive than two other 944s I previously drove (a leggy 944 2.5 and an S2 on stock suspension). Especially when compared to the S2 it was way more composed. |

So now on Koni fsd and eibach pro's still good but not as sharp... I have not found any eibach springs for the 944 I don't think they make them? |

It was the Sports option suspension from the factory, bascially on the early n/a cars consisted of Koni adjustable dampers, shorter and thicker springs (still available from OPC), 23mm front anti rollbar and 14mm rear anti rollbar. The specs and aprt numbers are all in the Tech Manual. |

Hi all - after a bit of digging there aren't many choices of damper / springs for an 83' car - apparently the wishbones changed from 84' onwards? so my choices are : Spax PSX kit ( RSX won't fit) Bilstien B6's with Spax Springs Koni's or Gaz Shocks with Spax springs : http://www.motorsport-tools.com/gaz-por ... rts-1.html I am leaning towards GAZ or the PSX kit but it would really useful to hear on anyone's experience with any of these set ups or they can suggest something better! Ideally I want them to be adjustable as it is not going to live exclusively on the track but unfortunately cant afford ohlins etc as have a lot to do on the car! |

I have the Spax setup front & rear on my 944 and I'm very happy with the adjustability. Had them in the 924 too. Easy to adjust and simple to fit. While you're in there fit adjustable top mounts on the front ![]() |

I run B6 in my own coilover set up with 300lb/in front and 200lb/in rear with 23.5mm bars. I really rate them, great dampers for road and track and (cough) I've even jumped the car quite high on them (on a sprint track) and you don't notice the landing at all so they do the job well! I assembled my own coilovers for around £700, but obviously this doesn't account for time and you have to know what you're doing/be handy with the tools to do this. I went for my set up over Gaz and Spax as I wanted to use monotube dampers- I stand by my decision so far. |

I've got GAZ Gold on my turbo with 300lb front springs, no rear helper springs. Masses of adjustability and car handles great. My car is down about 60mm which is probably a shade too low but apart from kissing the odd speed bump and scraping the sill extensions the odd time during enthusiastic cornering no real dramas. I did have problems with the nickel plating oxidising at an alarming rate but GAZ replaced my fronts under warranty. I now coat the shocks once a year with corrosion block and that has stemmed the degradation! Also worth ensuring the adjusters are free at least once a year. The fronts have nice chunky adjusters but the rears have little 5 pence sized numbers that are more prone to seizing especially if you use the car all year on winter roads. Overall good value for money. I think I paid about £500 probably 5/6 years ago now. Nearer £800 now I believe for same. I have also poly bushed the front ARB and have a front strut brace which tightens up the front nicely. Stuart |
