I have been going through the things that need fixing on my car and have had the air vent on the passenger side out to put the plastics back together into the clips etc thinking that was the rattle. Alas, this wasn't the problem. I have discovered that the glove box is supposed to have side holders to stop it falling straight down. I don't have these, would I be right in assuming these are broken inside the dash and the cause of the rattle? If so, are they definitely broken or could they have possibly just disconnected themselves? If broken, where do I get replacements?

Cheers.

Oval dash? The glove box lid has two rather pathetic ally U bend things to hold the glove box lid to the facia. But even that should not make a rattle. Check the bolts below the A posts - there are two - they secure the facia to the body... If the glove box is closed, the integeral box could be loose. The lock mechanism could also be loose - all are adjustable...

The only things holding the glove box lid to the car are the hinges at the bottom. I twist the opening 'switch' and it drops onto the passengers knees. I'm guessing there are things that are supposed to hold the sides of the lid that have disappeared into the dash? and yes, 1989 2.7 lux

Yes - they are two pieces of 'hooked' aluminium that tag into the glove box panel. Notoriously hopeless!

I doubt that those ally stop brackets are there - probably discarded by a previous owner - I also had the same problem... I replaced mine by using two leather strips - bit fiddly but works great...

I bought a set of these.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WPO-Porsche-944-968-glove-box-lid-hinge-door-repair-arms-nonairbag-version-/391025993277?hash=item5b0af7263d:g:LEkAAOSwsFpWRIY8

Took around 15 mins to fit - made from steel and the glove box is good as new now.

I actually don't mind the glove box dropping as it does. I'm more worried about locating the annoying rattle from that area of the car every time i go over the tiniest of bumps in the road. Any suggestions?

Tiniest bumps in the road - ?! I think your shocks are gone or an associated problem. Get your car jacked on a hoist and get them checked out . I see that you are new to the site! That's great - Welcome to Tipec - loads of folks here to help when asked!

It sounds like a plastic on plastic rattle. I thought it was the fins on the passenger side air vent as the plastic clips weren't holding them. After removing those and reconnecting everything I'm still getting a plastic on plastic rattle that is driving me insane. Call me mad if you like, but it really takes away from the fun of driving the car.

The sound is coming from behind the dash on the passenger side in the glovebox/vent area. Definitely in the cabin. Sounds like the fins of the vent tapping together or something not screwed up tight in that general area. I don't fancy taking it all apart without having a general idea of known problems. It's a 2.7 lux rather than an S2. I don't know if that makes much of a difference with the dash?

I may have your problem solved!

Image

The S2 has this item, probably yours as well (oval dash) - there is a tiny motor and associated spinner that is always running (ignition on). The plastic 'rattle' as you describe, is the tube not connected properly between the two. The spinner end is in the bulk head - just behind the glove box. Could this be your problem?

I'll certainly give it some investigation. Do I just need to twist off the vent and unscrew the screw behind it?

Follow the hose back to the motor - the vent hole (in the facia panel) leave alone.

yup - behind the glove box - you will have to remove the glove box tho - (easy - a few screws) to get to it...
