Post subject:  Goodbye for now.

After 8 years of 944 ownership it is time for me to bow out. My S2 was written off a couple of weeks back and my insurer has now settled with me on a figure that was pretty good. The car was only an economic loss as it had suffered exhaust damage and a broken lower spoiler so it will make someone a very easy repair.

I did toy with buying it back as salvage, however with the cambelt due, a major service required as well as 2 new front tyres, I have decided to take the money and run! Ownership has been an absolute blast over the last few years and considering I paid £6,500 8 years ago for a car with 49000 miles on the clock, to get my money back after clocking up 95000 miles of my own isn't bad going!

I would like to thank those of you who took the time to answer various questions for me over the years, this has been a most informative forum. Who knows, I may be back!

Best regards

Marcus

Best of luck Marcus ..

After being tw@tted this time last year, I narrowly avoided the write-off scenario, but only because I went the legal route rather than making a claim, so really do understand your feeling ..

Seems odd to write it off for what could be a maximum of £2000 to repair, and then pay out £6500 ?????

Last OPC price I saw for a 944 exhaust was £1100, the spoiler could be £500 + paint.
The insurer will be worried about hire car charges, availability of spares, collateral damage (broken exhaust manifold, hidden chassis damage) etc.
He'll get £2-3K for the salvage so better the known quantity, than something that could drag on with an unhappy customer.

Due to its previous history mine was valued at less than 2k - had it gone for an estimate it simply wouldn't have come back ...

The estimated repair bill was £4,000. They were suggesting £1,500 for the exhaust and would you believe £1,250 for the rear spoiler if you can find one. The main crux of the problem is that the engineers are very blinkered and won't consider anything after market or second had to make repairs. I was offered the chance to buy back the car for £2,100, I was tempted as I'm sure I could have had the repairs carried out for £1,000 or so, but as I said, I've been thinking of selling for a while and with the cambelt change looming large I think I made the right decision.

Someone will get themselves a good car as salvage. It is far too good to be broken for parts. If any of you do wind up with it, I've got the service history and an extra set of keys...the insurance company aren't interested at all!

Blimey. I would've given you a profit on the £2100. Would be a shame to see it get broken for parts.
