I have a cyl head that has the ceramic coating breaking up in a couple of ports. Can this coating be blasted off? And if so is there anywhere that can re apply? what are the benefits of the coating and is it actually required? Regards |

The coating is there to insulate the port to help retain temperature (and therefore energy) in the exhaust gasses, which helps with velocity. Porsche must have had concerns over moving the turbo to the other side of the engine so I assume this was a mitigating feature... When I rebuilt the head on mine a couple of years back I did notice some cracking and wastage of the ceramic liner in some areas, but it appeared to have been eroding rather than breaking away in chunks which wouldn't be good news for the turbine! I suspect most if not all 951 heads are showing the same issue by now?.. Personally if it doesn't look too bad I wouldn't worry about it, but that's just my opinion. I've no idea if if could be recoated, but I suspect not as the liner is cast into the head. |

When I had my stage 2 head built by LR many years ago I added a number of options one of which was a high flow exhaust coating...not sure what the process is but can say that the exhaust ports have remained very clean with no signs of any coating breaking up or ceramic damage. BTW one of the other options I asked for at the time was a similar coating ( not the same material) over the inlet chamber, thankfully this wasn't done as LR had some issues with this coating breaking up on previously supplied heads and thus played safe and left mine alone.
