. . . . am a complete novice, so any ideas of where I should start to look for the fault would be much appreciated! (the light on the button does come on, by the way!)
Thanks

Hi Howard -

Do a volt meter check on the connection tabs re. the rear window. Or clean out the connections (tabs)...

Thanks!
By the way, is there a fuse for the rear demister? Do you know what number it is in the fuse box, and what its rating should be?

Hi Howard -

As Waylander suggests - the inside of the fuse box lid should locate the fuse location and it's applicable rating. There is also a relay for the rear screen demister, which I think is the same as the fuse tester (it has a green LED). If you test a known working fuse into the tester relay and the green 'ok' LED doesn't light up, the chances are that the relay is faulty...

Likely to be caused by non-genuine hatch struts.

Well, turns out I either have nothing getting to the struts, or cannot use a multimeter: either are entirely possible. Will get the advice of the friend whose multimeter it is!
How do I know if struts aren't proper Porsche?
Cheers, Howard

You don't have to have proper Porsche struts! The tag is just the most convenient local earth for the window heater. You should also check basic damage on the heater veins - ie are any broken/split?
