Hi Folks -

I think quite a few bought Only944's Short Shift gear mod. I did - still works great.

Just looking for your thoughts if you have bought or considering...

(I don't work for Kyle by the way!).

You need to pull that rubber boot over the bolt in the linkage or water will get in there

But the the shift looks well engineered

Hello Waylander -

Correct - the pic was taken just before the tidy-up ie the boot over the bolt head

Do you need to use these in conjunction with the revised linkage under the gear lever?

No,

I've just fitted a new std gear lever linkage and importantly the plastic cup inderneath.
That gets rid of the floppy shift but still has long throw intil you do the short shift linkage.

I know there are updated better lasting gear levers linkages but they normally last 80k plus anyway

I have just received the short shifter and tie bar from only 944, It looks extremely well made. I have to put it away as it is a present from the kids! They were unimpressed though!

I also bought a chrome key fob off them very natty indeed.

Hi Marks -

As regards the gear shift itself - the gear peg shaft (held in by a circlip) gets worn and makes for a 'baggy' shift. If you take out the gear shift assembly, angle grind out the peg shaft (it's been welded onto the shaft at one end) and then replace it with a tight fitting thru' bolt, washer and a nyloc bolt plus lock-thread glue, that will sort the shifter slack. NB: Don't over-tighten the nyloc nut to the shift!

When you fit the only944 short shift at the gearbox end, you will have a great upgrade.

I also got the 944 keyfob from Kyle! Made in the USA!!

FWIW, I don't think the short shifter kit is necessary. If you replace all the worn parts in the stock setup then you'll find that the shift you have is tight, precise and very direct.

The reason people think 944's have poor gearchanges is because, as Dave said, the pin in the gear lever wears out and takes the hoop at the end of the long shaft that runs back to the gearbox with it. If you replace the pin and install 968 bushes in the hoop in the long shaft, and make sure that there is no play in the pinch bolt that holds the shaft onto the shifter mechanism on top of the gearbox, then things will improve immeasurably. Another source of problems is the ball joints on the stay bar at the back of the shifter mechanism, and replacing these is another step in the right direction (although it's easier and cheaper to make a rose-jointed shaft using a go-kart steering tie rod - details here: http://944foot2thefloor.blogspot.co.uk/ ... nkage.html ).

I had problems in all three of these areas on my S2. Less than £20 spent on some hardware and a couple of hours work and I now really doubt why anyone would want to fit a short shift kit to a 944.
