Post subject: | S2 front lights |
i have just put an S2 front bumper on my 87 Lux and am thinking of rehashing the way the lights work. I assume that the driving lamp (which i think is a high beam lamp) only comes on when high beam is on, and the side light (in the driving lamp reflector) comes on with the side light in the flip-up headlights?? Anyway, i want to wire it so that the side light (in the driving lamp reflector) has a totally independant switch and also, if possible, to fit a bulb in the driving lamp, which is a dipped beam type and also to wire it independantly with its own switch. This will avoid the flip-up lights raising in most normal circumstances (i.e. driving with side lights and dipped beam). But, are dipped-beam type bulbs available for the driving lamp? , preferably LED? If they're not, could the fog lamp be used or fitted with an alternative bulb? Ideally, i would also like a brighter Side lamp bulb, maybe LED...any ideas? I suppose if there were bulbs available for the driving lamp which had dip/main filaments, that would be even better. Any hints/tips on doing all this much appreciated.....Adrian |

The type of beam is determined by the design of the reflector and lens, not the bulb. |

yes but a shrouded bulb would produce a dimmed beam |

It still wont alter the beam pattern. |

Hi Adrian - This project of yours sounds very complicated! As regards the S2, there is no side light in the pop-up headlight units. The pop-up headlights (H4s) are dual beams and work in conjunction with the drive lamps (H2s). 'Flashing' via the low/high column stalk, activates the spots (ie not raising the pops). Bulbs are made to fit only certain lighting criteria sockets - so you cannot fit a dual beam (eg an H4) into an H2 driving lamp. And much controlled by a series of relays for safety - it might be worth you getting an S2 front wiring loom so that you can connect it all up. I often drive my S2 in low light conditions with just the sides and front fogs on (my car doesn't have rear fogs) - gives a nice spread of light before I have to resort to the pops being used - Dave |

thanks Dave, i didn't realise the S2 had no sidelight in the pop-ups, unlike the Lux....sounds like all i need to do is divert the first position on the rotary switch to operate the sidelight in the bumper (as per S2), so i don't need the pop-ups up for normal low-light driving....Adrian |

My Lux has the sidelights in the bumper anyway. I thought they all did. |
