Post subject:  Clutch pedal

All of a sudden, my clutch pedal has started misbehaving. When depressed, it releases the clutch but then sticks just above the bite point. I can hook my toe under it and it will spring back up resulting in a lot of free travel, or sometimes it will eventually come back up of its own accord. The clutch itself seems to work OK. This happened just after replacing the dash, but I cannot see how that could be connected to the problem. Any ideas ?

Mine did this and behaved very oddly. I took the slave cylinder apart and it was full of black goo and the rubber seal was virtually non-existant. I think your slave cylinder has failed, fluid is going past the seal. probably worth changing the master cylinder too whilst its in bits as it won't be far behind.

Master cylinder had the same problem with mine
When I changed it found that the piston was not returning all the way back
That's why you get the extra travel before it engages

A common problem this one and crops up on the forum often.

The going advice has been to: Replace both the master cylinder and the slave with new units (or repair as a cheaper option).
While the starter motor is off - to get the slave out - have the motor rebuilt ie bushes etc - makes a big difference...

Post subject:  It may just need adjusting

I had exactly this problem, and all the advice on the forum was that the master and slave cylinders were fubar'd. But when I checked, they were renewed by the PO only 5000 miles ago. It turned out that the adjustment screw had backed out on the clutch pedal due to the locknut being loose. It is a bit of a faff to check, you have to crawl under the steering wheel to adjust it, but it can be done with a couple of shortie 13mm spanners. Not easy if you aren't built like a pixie. It might be easier to find a small skinny mechanic to do it for you.

Duh - this was in reply to the post on the clutch pedal not returning, can a mod move this please?
