Post subject:  944 - Wipers Stopped

Hi All,

I've just enjoyed 7 days of having the 944 fully functioning. This is unprecedented... and quite enjoyable too.

I still have the annoying petrol smell with the window open, but I'll get round to sorting that with a hatch seal soon.

So to the problem....

I left work yesterday to go to Tolworth and my wipers were moving slowly regardless of the setting on the column stalk. I turned them off and back on again and they would not move. I did 10 miles down the A3 with no wipes in the middle of a storm - mildly dangerous!

This sounds like a broken motor but here comes the confusing part. After my 5-a-side game (around an hour and a half including the post match beers), I got back into the car and they burst into life, working perfectly on all 3 speeds until I got to the petrol station.

I turned the car off at the station with the wipers half way up the screen and when I got back in they now don't work again! Luckily it hasn't rained this morning, but I look a bit stupid driving around with wipers askew on the windscreen.

I've checked the fuses (just eyeballed them) and there don't seem to be any blown. There is no relay noise when I move the stalk, but understand that the relay is only for the intermittent so this probably doesn't mean anything.

Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated!

Will

Ok, I had very similar on mine. I seem to have solved it. First check the fuse holder for corrosion and clean it up. The remove the wiper relay, open it up and repair any dry joints. Put it back in. Then remove the wiper stalk and give that a good clean. Also worth buying a spare one as they are cheap from breakers. Then if you feel like it remove the motor and clean up the interior especially the motor tracks. Hopefully one or all of that will sort it.

Annoyingly I've just got in the car and they started working again.

These cars test the patience!

Age is not relevant where women are concerned.

Haha, does this mean I need to be nice to my wiper motor then as it might get upset at any moment?

Slightly frustrating that my wipers don't work when it's raining, but they're fine when it's nice and dry. This all points to an electrical short in my eyes... I'll get digging.

My fiancee (my OTHER relationship) might get frustrated that I have a few weekends of flings with a temperamental 944, a Honda CBR1100XX with an electrical gremlin (150hp cutting out randomly means that I need to take a pair of spare boxers with me everywhere) and a new BMW R80 scrambler project.....

Better get the tools out...

This exact same thing happened to me. My wipers run fine for a while and then suddenly they stop!

I had a fiddle around with the relay for a bit and they worked again for about half an hour this morning in the driving rain and then stopped again???

Any ideas before I chuck more cash at it for switches stalks relays and motors????

What LoFi said but pay particular attention to the electrical wiper and track on the wiper motor, it provides the self parking facility and on some wiper motors needs to be good for the wipers to work normally. Could also be dirty contact on the wiper relay as on my BMW in the pouring rain on the A303, corrected itself once the dual carriageway was reached!

I would go with the grease in the column switch going like concrete in the cold weather

The motors are pretty robust, so I would go for clean and lube
