Post subject:  Rev counter stopped working

Hello all,

Just picking a brain or two...

The Rev counter on my 2.7 Lux is not working...drives fine, even the fuel consumption meter is reading (all be with unverified accuracy)

Are there any common faults, is it easy to change inside a clock set if needed? All other clock set parts work fine!

Any pointers would be helpful, it's just I wouldn't mind if working in case get a non start and could diagnose from rev counter bounce (if it works)

Many thanks

Tacho was playing up on the S2....took it out and re soldered all the joints on the PCB....fixed :D

Many thanks whitey, I take it its only the few connections at the rear without splitting the clockset?

You have to take the gauge out of the cluster and remove the face to access the board.

I've got the same problem. Did this fix work for you too? Where is the fuel consumption meter? I can't remember seeing it in my 2.7...

Can you remove the gauges without removing the steering wheel?

You will have to remove the steering wheel. If you have an MPG gauge, it is in the bottom of the tacho.

I don't think I have an MPG gauge then. Will get the dials out next week and get it sorted. Hopefully that's all it is.

The fuel consumption gauge is at the top of the tacho on my square dash 944. Removing the steering wheel is the easy part - it's getting the indicator and wiper switches off together with their plastic surrounds (without cracking the latter) and then disconnecting the speedo cable that are the tricky bits.

Sounds like the square dash is a lot harder than the oval dash.

I have heard that that is the case. Actually undoing the speedo cable is not quite such an issue - it's connecting it up again that's the real PITA. Shame Porsche didn't go electronic a few years earlier.

I removed my tachometer and sorted the usual dry joint issue with the 3 wires but this isn't the reason mine isn't working. Any other suggestions as to common problems?

I've taken the tachometer to bits completely, checked all the circuits and can find no reason why it's not working. Is there anything you guys would suggest I try? I've never had a problem like this that wasn't in the cluster so i'm a little confused now. Maybe I'm missing something simple? I really don't know.

Found a couple of caps had gone short. changed them and all works. I've never had my rev counter working before, do they all bounce about a bit when decelerating?
