On MOT they advised slight play in front top mounts
So i jacked her up and had a wiggle
The play appears to not be the top mount, but in the shock itself between the piston and body

Is this normal/ heard of?

Thanks.

I had this very problem with my last 944, I asked OPC to check it out when it was in getting the belts replaced and they said it is quite normal for there to be slight play in the damper on full extension.
At the next MOT I relayed the information on to the inspector and his response was something along the line of "well they'll know better than me!" Never been a failure or even an advisory during my ownership.

I had the same on mine - I ended up putting a pair of 968 struts on in the end, although I'm not sure whether it was the sloppy strut or the loose castor block ( ) that was causing my knock ...

I had this on mine last service. It was just mentioned. I almost shelled out for new shocks. Glad I didn't.

I had a small amount of play in one front shock on my 968. When we came to replace them with Koni inserts, a hole needed to be drilled to release the gas pressure.
My indie did the the side with the play first and had no surprises when he drilled the hole as there was no gas pressure left. However, when he did the other side, he got a face full of damper oil as it was still pressurised.
My suggestion would be that if you have play in your shocks, they are probably due for replacement. There is no play in mine with the Konis in.

Had a bit of play in my Koni inserts on one side, likewise between piston and body was assured that it was not a problem, "Oh, they all do that" by a reputable Porsche specialist.
