I thought that the main-beam (driving) function of the lower light unit was switchable...

the cable tied plug is for the headlight height adjustable motor

ok .. so in the lower light unit there's the foglamp, a non switchable main beam and a pilot or side light?

I guess that as the round plug has 4 terminals, if there's one ground then the other three correlate as above??

Just as a side thought - my '82 924 had a switchable secondary driving light on main-beam...

........... but the lights are so poor that you need all of the help that you can get when driving at night.

I always preferred the control that earlier cars offered

Sounds like an earth problem (behind the centre console or on the bulkhead). The switch should toggle on an off the driving lights in the bumper. They come one with high beam and go off on dip, when activated. All series one and 924s had the switch, but the second blue tell tale is not always present.

I'm finally getting round to sorting out my missing fog/driving lights on the S2 ... Am I correct in thinking there should be a rocker switch on the console to switch them?? The fog element is switched by a rocker on the RHS of the steering column, but I can't see anything other than a spare loom spur (3 wire) under the console.. Whaddya think?? G

What "driving lights" are you referring to? On the front, the S2 has * headlamps in the popups (controlled by the main light switch in position 2) * side lights / parking lights (controlled by the main light switch in position 1) * front fog-lights controlled by the switch to the right of the steering column * "the other two" which are used for flashing (when the popups are down) and also come on in conjunction with main beam in the popups. They're not individually switchable. Oh... and of course front indicators

I think it will be the other one of 'the other two' ... I thought that the main-beam (driving) function of the lower light unit was switchable... Ok, so part two of the question - behind my headlight I've got a 3 cable connector zip tied to each lamp cage. Pins 1 and 3 (the outer pins) have 12v between then, the inner pin appears to be inert. Anyone have any idea what this is for? also, in trying to identify the connections for the fog/driving lamp, I've found a four pin circular plug - testing the female bits give me 12v potential, but I can't get anything between the two male bits - am I doing it wrong?

I have heard that's also the case for pre-model year '86 944s too (the "square dash cars") which carried over many things from 924s. Neither my '89 2.7 or my S2 has any provision for individually switching the third lamp in the combination light unit.

Yes, the driving lamps were switchable on 924s and series one 944s. The switch wasn't included in the series two 944 and it wasn't added for the Turbo (and S2) body either.

Are you going to add a control switch for the PU-mounted driving lights? I always preferred the control that earlier cars offered, but the lights are so poor that you need all of the help that you can get when driving at night.

But then again, the headlight flasher doesn't always seem to work - maybe the faults are connected. How are the switches supposed to operate (the car does have foglights as well) ?

Hi Folks - Me also an S2 driver - the 'bad' lighting experienced is, in my opinion, the alignment between the low/high beam on the drive (pop-up) headlights, coupled with the lower pod spots (on high beam). If you can get the sync correct (not easy), you should come right. Changing the drive bulbs ie H4 and H2 to more modern specs (I went with Hella's) does improve the situation... I never drive (low light) without the front fogs on (no rear fogs wired...) until I need to switch the mains on etc... Dave SA
