I think they're high carbon steel rods... the publicity shows them conforming to all sorts of damaged fasteners, metric or imperial and just spinning them off without any drama...

FWIW my wheel bolts are deep in the wheel and there would be a better chance of seeing a snowball fight in hell rather then getting the nuts off without damaging the wheel in the process...

The best best might be a 6 sided 'impact' socket - not a regular 12pt (DAMHIKT!) - as deep as you can get to apply turning force on a greater area of the nut's faces. I used a 12pt socket with a windy gun and was scratching my head as to the whereabouts of the origin of the aluminium chippings coming out .. :shock:

That was the first time I'd come across aluminium wheelnuts!

For the future and shiny new wheelnuts you're going to buy, I again would use a 6 sided socket - there are some that come lined with a special hard plastic liner to prevent the nuts being damaged. I've used some coppaslip grease on my nuts although there is a school of though that would frown upon this, but I've not had one come loose or corrode since.

YMMV of course ..

Hi All, I have noted today that the above are badly corroding rapidly, to the point where they are crumbling upon attempting to remove. Any advise re how to remove please, without ruining a teledial. Thanks

Use a slightly smaller socket and tap onto the nut, use a breaker bar to remove gently. Make sure you have replacement nuts!

In the future, when you have replaced nuts. Dont use aggressive wheel cleaner, thats what corrodes the nuts (and wheels if there are chips or cracks in the paint / laquer).

Guys, Thanks for your help on this, but I am still struggling to remove a couple of the nuts, any further ideas please? The heads are badly deformed .

There are mobile tyre fitters out there that will come and do it for approx £25 per wheel, but they will just do what Coco said. You need ideally the toughen sockets (grey metal normally) a big hammer, smack the socket on until it grips properly attach breaker bar and remove. I dont know what acces you have to the nut but you can cut a groove into it to release the grip on the thread, but this does risk damaging the stud.

It looks like it would do the trick, what's inside the socket head?? The aluminium bolts are fitted into teledials.

Greg 6 side Impact socket, much better description than mine, exactly what i meant. I have always used copper slip on wheel nut studs and on surface of wheel centre where it contacts hub. Never had a problem and makes life a lot easier if you are doing a lot of spannering on a car.
