Yay!
I get my 944 back in a week or so from the painters, the wheels are then off for powdercoating - I need new tyres on.
Can anyone suggest the best tyres (15") for a 1988 944 lux?
I've been trying to find out what the original fitments were but can't - anyone know?

195/65/15 was standard with 215/60/15 a very popular option.

I suggest you do lots of searching around our forum, because you will see conflicting opinions, but by happy coincidence the tyres I have are very popular: Continental Sport Contact.

I have noticed a huge amount of disappointment with Pirelli P1's.

How many miles do you intend to cover in the car and how do you intend to use it?

Probably only a couple of thousand a year attending shows not track days

I would have said Michelins (tyres are fairly reasonably priced in 195/65R16 due to it being a popular size), but they will probably go old before they wear out in addition to them costing a small premium over other brands!

Contis you cannot go wrong with, and Toyos offerings in that size should do the job just fine (IIRC it will be the CF-2 in a 65 profile).

I am not sure if they do them in 15's and they are not available everywhere, but I really am a big fan of a little know tyre called a Barum Bravarius 2.

Barum are a brand name owned and used by the Continental tyre company, makers of Porsche approved tyres, such as the Sport Contact range, and I was told by a tyre rep that it is continentals attempt to break into the Toyo tyre market.

I tried a set on my white 944 turbo and am completely happy with them. Great in the wet, great in the dry, and did not fail under heat on a the tipec trackday last year, with no melting of the tread or rolling visible.

The tyres which were on there were Continentals, but to be honest they outperformed the toyo proxies I have on one of my other turbos.. I actually spent much of the track day trying to push them further and get them to break free, but their grip outstretched my ability to remain seated in my white turbo's non sport seats, which never happened on the continentals.

I guess thats a new aplication of the "seat of the pants dyno", or rather the "sliding off the seat g-force meter"

Have not done a similar test in the wet, because I tend to be a bit of a wimp in the wet and not push the limits, but they do seem very good at keeping the car planted in the wet as far as I have pushed them.

I even have them on some of my other vehicles, such as the works vans, not to mention lots of customers cars, and they seem to get good feedback from everyone who has bought a set.

I'm in almost the same situation (timescale a little fluid ) and am awaiting the return of my 944 from the body shop. I've run Bridgestone S2s for 8 years and have found them to be superb, in both the wet and dry. I know a few others on here run them too and not heard any complaints/issues. I think Vince D runs his 928 on them?

I believe (famous last words) that oval dash 944s luxs were originally specced with Pirelli P6000s which, when I bought a set, found them to have horrendous road noise and changed them within weeks.

Like the sound of these Barum Bravarius 2 if they out perform Toyos as this is what I've been looking at to possibly replace the Bridgestones.

I'd like to hear what you decide to go for and, of course, post up some pics of the repainted car!

Oponeo.co.uk have those tyres, its supply only but I just bought £750
worth of tyres from them without a hitch, so they are reputable,
Then got them fitted to my wife's x3 by a local fitter result saved 300 quid!

Mine has been in the body shop since Nov 12th with an initial estimate of 6 weeks. To be fair I said to the chaps to do a good job rather than rush it through, plus they're being a bit friendly on the price in exchange for bumping it when the odd quick job comes in. Doesn't stop me wanting it back NOW!

Me too - it went in in October to be back by Christmas, but as he's doing it between jobs etc...
I just want her back to put together for the season, if it's ever dry enough to venture out.
With a refurbished leather interior and wheels she should look the biz!

I also have the barum bravuris 2 tyres fitted all round on my S2. Excellent price from web based tyre dealer. They do grip very well in both wet and dry conditions and seem to be wearing very well.
