I have been working on my cab and in the process of adding sound deadening i have taken out a huge great lump of metal from the O/S rear quarter panel, i always thought it was a rubber damper for a little extra protection in a rear end shunt.
But it seems just to be a 20kg weight ( guesstamate ) if it was originally to balance the car as the battery is on the nearside, and the driver on LHD models to.
Is it needed on a rhd car with a 100KG fat boy driving? removed, car still sits totally level, new shocks fitted! but any weight like that cant be good for performance, and i need more anyway.
Opinions please, can i leave it out?

As I understand it Porsche found in testing that they were getting scuttle shake & this was to dampen this out. I believe early 911s had weights in the front bumpers in a similar way.

It's a vibration damper only fitted to 944 cabrios. The coupe doesn't have it. If you can live with the vibrations it's supposed to be damping out, then the world won't end if you do without it. The car will just become a little less "civilised".

They had lead weights and twin 6v batteries mounted in the corners, but for a different reason.
