- no not fuel, water. I noticed yesterday that the passenger's carpet was absolutely soaking wet. The car had been parked on a gentle downhill slope and it had been bucketing down; my suspicion is that the battery box (early 944, remember, so under the bonnet) was accumulating water. On inspection, I can see no drain holes - surely there should be at least one somewhere ? There is a tube appearing at the bottom of the A-pillar which presumably drains the sunroof, and another small pipe running back from the expansion tank, so presumably water is meant to drain away from the area somehow.

I've had to put the 944 in the garage to use my dehumidifier, which means the Healey has been relegated to a barn - outrageous !

I have heard that the early 944s suffered from this and in the end can swamp the electrics below the battery box, resulting in mayhem in the fuse box. Am sure there is a mod to drain the battery box...

Sorry cannot be more help...

Dave (S2 - battery in back)...

There are drains - they're on both sides (battery tray and matching empty one on the offside) and often get gunged up.

On the battery side it faces down towards the brake booster - has a rubber flap, around the size of a 10p piece. It just drains down there and out under the wheel well. No tubing, just a hold in the firewall with rubber grommet.

It's worth taking a Stanley knife to the rubber and opening it up (engine side of firewall).

Worth lifting out the battery an check for rust and holes under there. If it just looks rusty it's worth giving it a clean up as you may find it is holed.

Found the hole - thanks. It was properly gunged up. Cannot find the time to remove the seat in order to lift the carpet, and the dehumidifier is struggling to get on top of it, so the quickest way of drying the carpets is likely to be the promised heat wave this week.

The seat takes all of 30 seconds to remove. 4 x 10mm bolts. Well worth doing.
