944 has been running well for months.. Typically a week before I head to south of France with a group of friends, she decides to play up. :(

On occasional start up, she starts but then cuts out. If you use throttle while idling she runs rough.. Give it a minute or two and she is ok...
Also does the same intermittently during driving, but cures itself after a second or two. Give her a bit of throttle and using engine to slow down, back on throttle and hesitates or runs rough... And lastly have noticed under high revs through gears the power feels on and off... Almost like boost is leaking....

Does anyone recognise these symptoms? Have fitted new dime relay, coil, plugs, HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm. Had a look for split vacuum hose as well but all was good. Although I did break a hose that seemed to be hardened with age, but guessing this only broke after I pulled it hard to remove.. See below pics. Quality not great

My first thought on encountering such symptoms would be "dirty fuel". Maybe a blocked filter somewhere - have you run the tank very low recently, or filled up at a cheap and nasty filling station ?

Go through the vacuum hoses aka 'the birds nest' as it could be a monster leak somewhere, but could equally be related to either the TPS or AFM- take a look at Clarkes Garage for the testing procedures for these, both are fairly straight forwards.

Judging the state of some of the hoses in your pictures I'd be starting there if I'm honest.

I will be intrigued to see what this turns out to be. I had very similar symphtons to you.

Quote:
My 944 has bee quite dependable as of late. It is a good job really since it became a daily driver with me putting on more miles in 6 months than the car covered over 5 years.

However it seems it may have taken its toll. A short while ago now and again on rare occasions (it used to do it more when cold ) the car will idle OK (if I am honest, it would stumble a bit more, and hunt slightly), yet when it came to revving the car it would not rev beyond 2krpm. This would soon clear itself with business returning to normal (idle is generally very steady on this car, and it pulls well), although sometimes it would idle at closer to 2000rpm for a short period of time before settling back to its normal idle within 15 seconds or so.

Today this problem came back to haunt me twice, but regardles of engine temperature. This time the car was barely idling, with revving it causing no change in RPM but for it to attempt to cut out, and at one point it did just stumble and die. I restarted it and within seconds the issue went away. When it was close to dying with no throttle I noticed that the boost gauge went close to 1 bar, indicating that very little vacuum was present (at idle it tends to set at or lower than 0.4 IIRC).

I was thinking along the lines of AFM or TPS, but I cannot see how it would tie in with a change in vacuum.

What are your thoughts? There seem to be no vacuum leaks present, although I guess you never know.

The FPR was suggested but I wonder if it was my AFM. The wire run was tight to but it had also started to wear on the track. I was tempted to try a new item from FrazerPart to be honest.

Thanks for tips so far.... I have had to give in & drop down to local indie Hillcrest as work is manic.... I mended my split hose with gaffer tape & drove the 20 odd miles this afternoon to hand car to Simon... Annoyingly car drove with no dramas, but there is definitely a power loss higher in the rev range. If its a vacuum leak, my thoughts are the problem is worse when under prolonged pressure, but short sharp bursts do not trouble it....

I doubt it is fuel, but not to be ruled out..... This problem has occurred before out of the blue, but it has not happenned for over a year. Hillcrest initial thoughts are not vacuum related as it would be constant, but more pointing to a possible electrical issue somewhere.... I guess that could be a number of things.

Considering its the week before bank holiday, and they are down a man or two, the garage understood my dilemma and are going to do their best to fix before the trip. I guess I will get a new hose at least....

Also the comment about state of hoses I agree with. Most are actualy in good nick & there is a lot of dust, oil & grit from 25 years of use, but one of my jobs over the summer will be the swap out for new stuff, or black matt silicone..

Anyway car is in a better place and fingers crossed she will be good for the trip this friday.

Will keep you all posted once hillcrest report back... :D

Well the car behaves the whole time it was in the workshop so it left ok. I'm now approx 900miles into a euro trip and the car only just started doing its thing again... Noticed throttle cable has some.slack, so hoping an adjustment could be in order. My hunch is the cable is hopping over the throttle mechanism when flicking the pedal. Worth a try.

Also had a bit of bad luck, me and another got a driving ban in France for flouting the speed limit in France.

Gendarms were cool but told us 2, we cannot drive cars in France anymore, so we had to leave 2 cars in Loudes, jump in with other 2 cars and drive 3 hrs to Geneva in Switzerland. Parked cars and rented a car from French side of Geneva airport and did a one way drop to St Etienne. At St Etienne the other two caught a train to Le Puy Valey and a taxi 4 miles to Loudes. Drove cars to St etienne, picked us up, drove to Geneva airport, ad a car swap and voila! We are now on lake geneve!!

We got a 90euro fine and our licences taken away. We find out tomorrow if we get an extended French ban, or we are free to travel in France.

As much fun as we were having, we were stupid enough to be caught by a gendarm bike spotter. They were absolutely cool and advised us to head to the D roads to avoid detection! Pretty nice cops if you ask me!

So if your planning a French trip take heed. What a ball ache that was, but om pls side we are now on way to stelvio, furka etc

944 has so far been epic!!!!!!

A French driving ban is all part of the holiday story!

I once managed to talk my way out of one up in the mountains on the way to Val Thorens. Was in a friend's 930 and we were sharing the driving. I'd been in it for all of 5 mins when I got clocked by a police bike outside of Annecy on an A Road. 121mph. Yes, mph not kph!

Took some heavy convincing and a bit of cash but he got a photo of him sitting in the passenger seat to show his mates!

For those going to Le Mans beware. I was clocked at 135 mph and joined a queue of Brits paying their on the spots. It was a few years ago and got away with 90 Euro fine, end of. Nowadays you will really get dropped on.

Well good news in that I made it home. Had to change ferry from Dieppe to Dunkirk, and just found out that our licences were posted to home last week & we only had a 3 day ban! Last week we called to prefecture, and they told us that the case had to be referred to British Embassy!! Typical un organised french..

Anyway we had a blinding time driving black forest, swiss lakes & border road from south of belgium to Dunkirk..... (stelvio, furka was shut)

944 was a great car and learnt alot about how to drive it very well!!
