When setting off, my speedo will sometimes not move and then when you get to about 20mph it all of a sudden springs to life and will then perform perfectly fine. It only misbehaves when setting off in first. Any ideas?

I wasn't sure how the 944s speedo works, but from the way it behaves, am I right in saying that it's a cable linked to one of the front wheels and that the cap is a bit worn and isn't gripping as well as it should..?

Depending on the year of your car it may have a cable drive or it will be electrical. Early square dash models had a cable driven from the N/S/F hub where as oval dash models have a sensor on the gearbox.
My last car used to do this of it had been parked up for a while & a small tap on the dashboard would spring the needle back into life.

It's an 86 with newer dash so I'm guessing it's the sensor on the gearbox variation then? Any tips on easy checks?

Check the pins in the plug on the gearbox sensor aren't all green.
