Post subject:  MOT and fog lights

As people may be aware I have an issue with my fog lights in that I went to change a faulty bulb and ended up having to drill out the fixing screws on both lights as they were both only held on by one screw and needed fixing on properly.

I am now stuck with the backs of the fog lights still on the car but the lenses reflectors and bulbs removed. In order to get the backs off i'm going to have to remove the front splitter entirely. I tried without doing this and the backs are rusted on.

Sod's law my car is coming up for MOT next month. Does anyone know if the car would fail with the front fog lights in this current state. The rears are still there and should work (I'll need to test them).

Only need rear fogs & warning light for an MOT, although you need front side lights which on mine were in the foglight cluster!

I thought the sidelights were in the driving light unit, not the foglight, i.e. the ones in the bumper, not the spoiler/splitter ? But then I am new to these cars so might well have got that wrong !

Whoops yeah sorry the lights in question are the driving lights under the bumper.

The wires for the lights are still in there hanging around. Should I tape them up for the MOT?

I was told that if the switch is fitted for front fogs, then they must operate, by my MOT man.....try blanking off the switch on the dash for the test ? :?

Werd. He's full of sh*t

All you have to have working is your offside rear fog light, and the tell tale on the switch for the rear fogs.

Right the mysteries of 944 LUX lights is a bit clearer now I have read the manual for my 1985.5 944 LUX.

The lights below the bumper in the front spoiler (not in the bumper) are definitely the fog lights. The lights in the bumper are described in the manual as 'Additional Headlights' They also term these as 'axillary driving lamps' and I quote "The side light is integrated in the auxillary driving lamp".

When I have my side lights on these are small bulbs integrated within the Additional (or Auxillary) Headlights in the bumper. Dipped headlights are the pop up headlamps and when I switch to full beam via the indicator stalk the main bulbs in the Additional (or Auxillary) Headlights come on.

It is therefore definitely my front fog lights that are not in the car at present (well, the backing panels are, and the wires, but not the lens, reflector or bulb).

The instructions for the fog lights in the manual say that "In vehicles with fog lights and rear fog warning lights the rear fog warning lights can only be switched on if the fog lights are on." This is correct as I can only get the rear fog warning lights to illuminate if both the front fog light and rear warning light switches on the dashboard are switched on. The rear warning lights do still come with both switches despite the actual front fog lights being off the car.

The big question is if the rear fog lights can be made to work but only by switching on the missing front fog light switch is this still going to pass the MOT.

Yes, the fronts are irrelevant.
The auxiliary lights are driving lights & come on with main beam only.

Not switchable on series two cars, but selectable on series one 944s and 924s. They can fail to operate on both models due to poor earthing and this will take out the side lights (MOT requirement) too.

Can you clarify what you mean by that ? I'm not sure whether my lights are working as they should ('84 square dash model). I cannot select rear fog without front fogs (a single, three-position switch), and I cannot quite work out what happens when I have fogs on and switch to main beam - should all six lights come on ?

Im talking about the standard bumper mounted driving/side lamp units, not the optional PU mounted fog lamps.

My understanding is that if it's fitted it has to work. Got told that years ago. Might have changed now though.

Doesn't apply to Front fogs John.
