The car drove faultlessly for 100mile but when I came to park the car coming off the motorway, going into first almost took my hand off. It made a loud crunch noise and sent a harsh vibration up the gear stick. I always thought it had lots of play when in each gear. It will rev fine under load all the way through all gears (5th gear from 30-40 ish under fill load is perfect with no slipping) and only seems to do this when it's hot. Reverse isn't as bad as first.

Any ideas guys? I've noticed a loud whine from the transmission, is this normal on these cars or is that a clue?

They do whine a bit. Lots of owners have replaced their gearbox oil and reported quieter running and smoother shifting.

Also the linkage can wear so that you are not getting a full throw on the stick.

Cheers for the reply. Are there any tech notes on here to show you where and how to check the linkage? I'm quite new to these
