Post subject:  944 Turbo head gasket diagnosis questions

Hi all,

My car has been using quite a lot of water recently so I have been keeping an eye on the filler cap and hoses. I've checked for leaks and the condition of the hoses all seems fine. There is quite a lot of water in the system, not so much a 50/50 mix as i've been replacing with water only as I was going to flush this weekend.

The oil filler is quite milky and there is residue all down the pipe. The dipstick is has no residue though.

My car has had the head gasket done in the last 10k miles about a year and half ago, so may need re torquing.

What would you guys suggest I do to diagnose the problem? It may not be head gasket related, just a coolant leak somewhere so I'd like to test both for a head gasket and coolant leak.

Check the plugs you may find one that has been steam cleaned, but just a bit of condensation around the filler cap could mean you've not thrashed it enough. Hope its just a weeping pipe.

Oil cooler matrix leaking also has possibilities. Not a very pleasant job either to be fair!

I'm using over half a litre a week and doing short journeys.
The milky oil could be condensation from short journeys.

I need to determine where the coolant is leaking from and maybe get an off the shelf head gasket test.
Any recommendations?

Hi :)

Where are you ? If near Bournemouth I can run an HG test (for free of course)

All the best Brett :)

Mayo on the cap is not a worry TBH, most will do that unless they are taken out of a very good run, or at least both of mine did, with one of them having a very recent HG change and head!

What state is your header tank cap in? Have you checked near the heater matrix dare I ask?
