Hi all, Been reading across the net about engine removal on a 944. IT seems the 'Mericans are against it massively, but also seems like because they're left hand drive it complicates it somehow. Mine is a bog standard 1983 944 with manual steering etc - it out of the top such an issue? Only ask as I'd like to do a full bushing change on the suspension and would rather do that with the suspension in situ rather than crossmember dropped etc (in my mind, it means that it's easier to pinpoint where I made a mistake if it feels crap afterwards!) I bought an engine hoist earlier in the week, but it's not been delivered yet... Looks like my easter weekend of fixing has disappeared... Will |

We've done two engine out jobs, the 16v S was less straightforward than the early square dash we did later but neither was dramatically difficult. Method, organisation and good photos are your friend. Both came out through the top, its tight but doable. the radiator needs to come out. |

I took it out the top also with the bonnet attached - removing it makes it easier tho - you'll need an engine hoist of course. There's a post on my blog (in my sig) about how I went about it. Remove the intake gubbins, mark everything as you go with masking tape and take reference pics as ChrisM mentioned. It was much simpler than the internet experts led me to believe. Hi deLux, Thanks for your post. I have infact been following your blog post with input from Clarks manuals - Love your blog, makes everything a bit easier! One thing I must disagree with is the fact that you say the bellhousing bolts are easy to get to.. maybe I'm mental, but I spent a whole day getting the three from above yesterday. At one point I was using a spanner on a spanner on a spanner for a ratchet! Any tips for this? I've done my best to mark bits as I go, but feel there will be a few headscratching moments when I get to it! Will |

Our cars must be different, I could just above get a spanner on the one on the passengers side and I've spent 3 hours turning it a 10th at a time! I wonder if the new engine mounts have taken up some precious space? Regardless, new belhousing bolts will be needed I think! Will show a picture later... Will |
